The price of streaming vs out right owning

As an exercise I decided to take $160 x12 putting me around $1920 a year for subs.

Looking at average prices;
TV Series on DVD = 40
Movie on DVD = 20
Vinyl album = 25
NFL pay per view = 5 (There doesnt seem to be any way to price out a single NFL game so I just made this up)
Book = 15

Examining my habits, Id say the following;
2 seasons of a show per month = 80
2 movies a month equals = 40
4 albums a month = 100
4 games a month of NFL = 20
2 books a month =30
Total per month = 270 a month or 3240 a year.

Pro of owning is ill never lose access to the content (although it could be degraded over time, destroyed, or stolen)
Pro of subscribing, I have a far greater selection than I would ever have physically. (al beit some titles may become unavailable over time)

They don’t pay $800.
If you go back to his list you'll see that he's included at least 3 fairly expensive business-related services (Microsoft, Adobe, QuickBooks) as well as expensive satellite Internet service. And then far far far too many entertainment services beyond that. So correct, the average person pays nowhere close to his figure.

I have Discovery, Hayu (my wife watches all those "House Wives of") and I think she picked up Disney+.

Thats its, and I dont hardly use them. I may go back to cable once football season begins.

NFL+ is like 16 bucks a month and you get every game except Monday and Thursday night plus redzone on Sundays. I only mention it because I had cable until a year ago because they didnt offer a sub without a cable package for redzone.

Agreed!

The thread title specifically says the cost of streaming, but then the OP’s list includes a TON of things that are not in any way streaming services.

It seems that what the OP really is complaining about is the high cost of more or less ALL of his monthly bills. Certainly a valid complaint, especially considering all the things on his list (many of which I’ve never even heard of!) but it’s in no way a list of just monthly streaming service

Kind of like starting a thread titled “I Don’t Like Many of the Features in the New D&D” and then listing things he doesn’t like about Call of Cthuthlu, Traveller, and Warhammer along with D&D

Well, I wouldn't include utility bills in a list of subscriptions. I mean, if you include my mortgage and by grocery bills, sure! Way over $800!
I did not include the internet, nor do I pay $800/month any longer. It is about 200/month now with the business software I am required to have as a contractor.

Buying content via Vudu, Steam, or physical is far cheaper. I have access to more content than I can consume per month.

For books, I have a several thousand physical books and around 2k ebooks all safely housed in Calibre. I have found that not much new stuff comes out these days that is worthwhile.

Lots of people also sub to apps on devices etc.

It seems average cost for subscriptions in the US is now $273ish per month although the figure varies depending on what they count.

I also forgot monthly cloud storage fees before.

The OP took this from a different thread where I was specifically talking about sub and licenses versus owning. It was not about streaming only.

Man that sounds nice. I wish I liked watching football, hockey is so insanely stupid in the US to be able to follow a single team all year with their broadcast rights in the US being spread out so much.
