Summer holiday coverage at my work.

I feel this. I work in a group of 6. Two others are good at their jobs (work ethic on par with mine). Two are a complete waste of skin. Another was recently elevated to a senior position and seems to be devoting all his time to the upper roles, rather than looking at our work queues. The upper roles might require 20% of his time, as a rule. Guess which two are currently on vacation.

We've had handheld calculators all my life, but I still had to memorize the multiplication tables in middle school, endure numerous classes in algebra and trig and geometry in high school, and suffer through four semesters of calculus in college. Even though we can punch any combination of numbers into a $2 gadget (or our $1200 phones) and instantly solve any equation to pinpoint precision, we still require (not recommend) people learn to do mathematics "the hard way" before they can graduate high school, let alone earn a degree and become a licensed engineer.

I don't buy this nonsense about AI creating a "post-skill society."

"If I ever opened a trampoline store, I don't think I'd call it Trampo-Land, because you might think it was a store for tramps, which is not the impression we are trying to convey with our store. On the other hand, we would not prohibit tramps from browsing, or testing the trampolines, unless a tramp's gyrations seemed to be getting out of control."
