Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

I think if someone proposed a cool idea to replace Grit for their fighter concept, you should say yes unless there is a good reason to say no.
100% ... agreed. (How are there no Subway Takes GIFs available here?)

I have a massive file of homebrewed things for Shadowdark. Swapping in class abilities or whole talent tables is something I am totally into.

Yeah, I repeat for the peanut gallery that I really don't give a flip about "balance" in Shadowdark.
Hell, I love me some heavy 3E / PF1E and I've long argued AGAINST worrying about balance too much in those games. So SD is so much further away. And thats great.

I do think that the core classes give a great guide for what a class should present and there is always something "fun and flavorful" and I think warlocks should have just a little more fun before they die.

And Thievery and Wayfinder don't grind against the spirit of Shadowdark
Why would a warlock get additional advantages on specific "skills" like Thief or Ranger? They are a) not a "skilled" character, they literally can be any normal buffon that met the devil at a crossroad and did a pact. Why would they be skillful like a scholar or thief or ranger that trained for years or even longer? They are the cultish freaks that get powers from a supernatural being.

If a special additional ability I would maybe add something like if you convert a new patron you get something additional... but in the end that probably would also be a boon and doesnt need extra codification.

Depends. And certainly they don't have to have that.
I offered a warlock of Shune has advantage on checks involving history or translations as an example. That COULD be a power gained from Shune. I'd be open to tons of alternatives.
I think fixating on advantage on skills misses the point.
Warlocks are not interesting. They would be more fun to play if they were more interesting.

I totally understand what BryonD is saying, the Warlock class doesn't look very exciting to play unless the GM thinks up challenges or twists to how their Patreon fits into any given small or big adventure. I feel like that's where the meat is supposed to be with Warlock but it doesn't really shine through in the 2 page spread.

:) That kinda becomes a special thing too. The warlocks special ability is "the campaign will include plot points which engage your character's duty and connection".
