IMO Jones isnt all that creepy, and id want Braniac creepy and alien and almost spiderlike, which Ward is simply much better at.

They rebooted both Luthor and Brainiac a few years before the Crisis, which is when we got Braniac's skull ship and Luthor's power armor. I believe there was at least one storyline where they fought and merged pre-Crisis.
The only one I can think of is Alan Moore’s “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” when Brainiac merges with Luthor in an attempt to kill Superman.

IIRC Lana Lang (who’s gained superpowers to protect Clark) kills Luthor before the LSV kill her too. What’s left of Brainiac detaches itself from Luthor’s skull in a final attempt to kill Superman but fails.
