I've got one player who tends to fall into ruts, but honestly, if that's what she wants to do, its what she wants to do.

There’s a guy I’ve gamed with for a couple of decades whose D&D PCs were mostly Wizards with variations on the same nearly optimized spell list. (He didn’t use the online guides, he just had a very mathematical mind.) Over that time, I’ve seen him play a couple of warrior types, and 4Ed “forced” him to make different spell selections.

Thing is, it was rarely a problem because he played his wizards with an efficiency and skill that most people couldn’t. Occasionally there might be an issue if someone else wanted to play an arcanist, but usually, even that would be peacefully resolved.
