Melf's Guide to Greyhawk

D&D General Melf's Guide to Greyhawk Coming From Luke Gygax & WotC

Credit Morrus with the image above with the elf fighting the troll…looks fantastic!

It's from the current Player's Handbook as an example of the spell Melf's Acid Arrow.

I chuckle, because so many have insisted that the current PHB is full of pastels and non-violence
Oh, yeah. My only addition was adding the logo and the text.

I judge by the number of products (few) and the fact that he always had collaborators. To me that means he is not particularly experienced and chances are he got those due to his last name moreso than his skills.

Can he help with some info on Greyhawk, sure. Would I want him to be the lead on a GH WotC product, no, I’d want someone more experienced
So, you'd prefer if Luke had more experience writing and publishing game products . . . . which is exactly what he is doing with this project . . . .

Luke's main draw is his personal history with the game and his activism within the RPG community. He certainly has published RPG products previously, although I can't speak to how good they are, which would be subjective anyway. If that isn't good enough for you . . . well, shrug, okay . . . you should take a pass on "Melf's Guide to Greyhawk".

So, he worked with partners on previous projects? Like pretty much every single RPG product released within the past several decades?

Is Luke the "lead" on this book? He's certainly the draw. But we don't know much details yet. If he is the lead designer . . . I'm cool with that, and I'll certainly give the book a chance.

I’d prefer if he were more experienced by the time he is working on this, correct. That he gains experience from it is irrelevant.

Not exactly ringing endorsements… As I wrote somewhere in this thread, him contributing some knowledge about Greyhawk (or notes from his father) is fine. In fact that is probably where he could help the most.

only if the other projects had exactly two creators each. The adventures run in the 40-60 page range. The exception being Lost City if Gaxmoor that he wrote with his brother, which runs about 140 pages.

There are plenty of 40 page or so adventures from a single author around. No one says he cannot have an editor or people contributing art.

Is Luke the "lead" on this book? He's certainly the draw.
I see his main draw is potentially having access to notes of his father and memories from being in his campaign, other than that… no idea if he will be the lead, it’s certainly not the role I would prefer him to have

I probably will

A book can have a big name attached to is and still be good. I get that the instinct is to assume it's gonna be trash, but I can't tell you how often I've referred to the Gygax Book of Names... And Gary had very little to do with that book, or that entire line afaik.

I haven't actually checked out the last big crowdfund Luke did... The company is GooeyCube right? I'll say he charges a premium for his name, that's why I didn't back that last big project he did, just didn't have the $$$ at the time.

yes, it’s GooeyCube, that company is also charging a lot all on its own for all the handouts etc they include
