They also view muggle tech as crude, primitive and beneath them. But main thing is, HP is kids/young adult book series. Factor in that guns are that big culturaly in uk or europe in general, and it's easy reason why no one uses them. You also don't see anyone using cell phones ( Nokia 5510 was big in 98) or telephones, no kids walking around with GameBoys or walkmans (which is something one would expect in school in that era).

I think it would be more accurate to say that the WW as presented in the books is condescending, arrogant, and profoundly ignorant (not to mention incurious and unimaginative) about mundane society, science, and culture. (Interesting how easily JKR presents that without meaning to.) They have no idea how the mundane world works and don’t care. It’s very likely that this will come bite them in the arse in years to come as cellphones and the internet make their terrible approach to the masquerade untenable.

I saw the trailer. I can't say I'm that interested in the show. That said, I enjoyed the rings of power so I'm not someone who is the most skeptical of reboots. I think I'd give this show a try, if I happened to have HBO access.

It doesn't yet look like it's doing much different than the movies, and if it stays that way I don't have much interest. But with more runtime there is at least an opportunity to do somethiny interesting.

Yeah, I just hope they take care in terms of how the whole show / cast are portrayed.

The book and movies were quite non diverse, and it wouldn't look that great if the new Snape is one of very few POC, but is the one bullied by James and Co, or the one POC teacher in faculty, and the one Harry suspects of wrongdoing....

Outside of that, is the kind of show id like to be supportive of / watch, but can't thanks to JKR.

I believe from memory that electronic devices dont work in Hogwarts, due to the ambient magical levels. Steam trains still work though, so some level of gun in theory would work, but like you say less prevalent in UK.

You could make a Hogwarts show that was set at any time within a thousand year period, and do things that are new and interesting AND have call backs and fan service. Why hasn't HP been "milked" the same way as Star Wars. It's universe is certainly big enough.

Arthur is a good illustration - he’s a muggle expert and genuinely curious but he basically knows and understands nothing, and he’s seen as a weird crank who’s interested in a pointless subject. And even he is pretty condescending and arrogant about muggle science.

because non-magical folks are never those things about groups they don't interact with normally.

They did a whole movie prequel series. Started off pretty strong, but kind of lost itself - and due to various factors (mostly money) they're not finishing it
