Trailer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Season 1) trailer

Tolkien was very much not a Nazi. When his German publisher asked him to certify that he was "Aryan" in order to be able to publish the Hobbit in German, he basically told them to bleep off, but in slightly more polite terms.
Yes, I know. But had he been a Mosley supporter, I think we’d have to interpret his art very differently. I’d also hope that LotR wouldn’t have been nearly as popular. Maybe D&D would have been based on The Worm Ouroboros instead.

Also, as another PoC on this site (and I suspect there are plenty) I too appreciate PoC representation in media but not even slightly enough to watch this, ever.

yes it's true and insane. Most of it i'm sure is due to the casting but there's a small part possibly happening due to it being JK Rowling's harry potter world.
Wait, so is this because he isn’t Alan Rickman (a reasonable complaint but hard to avoid with, you know, the entire living population of actors and thus forgivable) or because of the character he plays (who is indeed a terrible person, but weirdly given a pass repeatedly by the writing)?

Because of course the latter is just stupid. Actually, scratch that, both are titanically stupid.

I've never been much of a HP fan. I appreciate its impact on expanding fantasy fandom and making some readers happy, but it's always struck me as deeply parochial and unimaginative
It more or less an accidental rip of 'A Wizard of Earthsea' in that there are a number of uncanny similarities to the older novels, but the lack of imagination in Potter suggests the author wasn't well read enough to have done that on purpose.

It then mixes that with some horrible takes on class, slavery, birthright entitlement rather than heroism through character, etc.

It had a big impact, but it's not a great work nor an original one nor even an admirable one.

After all - Wicked wasn't exactly original either nor is it Shakespeare (though it's not bad writing either), but it's take on things was admirable (and given that the author of Wicked isn't linked to genocide the same way as the Author of Oz who was behind orchestrating Wounded Knee, it also lacks that taint).

But Potter just stands for a whole pile of bad messaging on issues of class and equality, compiled with writing of dubious quality, and is either a theft, or an accident of coincidence.

any reason to send an actual death threat over something you disagree with is stupid.

I'm following thread about this same topic on another forum (general one). In 60-ish post so far, 0 mentions of Rawling, her politics or politics in general, just pure HP based discussion and occasional shitting on studios for milking bellowed franchise. Here, on forum with geeks and fantasy/sf lowers, there are more discussions about Rawling herself than actual tv show. :(

@Zaukrie

Guns? In Great Britain? Where even police don't carry guns and firearms ownership is heavily regulated? It wouldn't make any sense.

On unrelated note, death threat, over choice of actor in kid tv show about imaginary wizarding world is so unhinged that i have no words.

Ah, good point on the guns. As an American, it just seems easy, alas. I have no idea why I blanked that. And, yes, the death threats are very sad.

It’s not that big a deal, I think - sure, muggles have made guns illegal, but clearly the WW gives zero faeces about mundane laws or they’d file a flight plan every time they got on a broom.

In The Worst Witch (a similar and older UK book series) an evil witch IIRC uses a buckshot spell, presumably because she thinks it’s neat (and also none of this save or die nonsense, it’s supposed to hurt).
