It's like deja vu all over again. It's like deja vu all over again. It's like deja vu all over again. ...

If I had to guess 6e has D&D shift to be more live service. 4e failed at this, 5e is having increasing success with D&D Beyond. 6e will have them pushing hard in that direction again as the potential profitability is too promising to the suits. I expect the lesson learned of tailoring the game to the players will be lost and instead the game will be tailored toward monetization. They would love to have an AI DM service they could charge for. There will be more player option bloat as they chase the whales. They will probably be more restrictive of digitally sharing player option content. Only available if you purchase it or DM plays a steep fee for sharing.

In terms of gameplay, i think they'll adopt more digital friendly rules for things like stealth. I actually expect class strcutre to say similar, though abilities and balance may change a bit. They will have to do something about low level control spell proliferation. Possibly nerf those spells, possibly buff martials.

That's my expectations.

If 6e happened soon, it could only go one way, which is a strong rejection of 5e. There is no way for 6e to come abour that doesnt involve 5e imploding somehow.

Past that...no idea. I suspect it would just put dnd on ice for a while.

  1. Accessible without books--focus on digital. Kids will break out their phones during lunch break anywhere and play a quick game as opposed to use lugging our books into the library to play.
  2. Focus on the character and the cool/weird backstories they have. I say this because in my observation of the kids I see playing (of which my 10 year old and his friends are some), they aren't really focused on the combat part that was so critical when I was a kid in the early days playing. They care much more about taming that monster and having it as a pet than they do killing it. Therefore...
  3. XP and leveling is more story driven than acquiring xp from defeating monsters.

While I do not doubt the potential of this prediction, that sure looks like a game I would never pay for or play.

I get it. Likewise, the overwhelming number of younger 5e players right now would never want to play 1e. Different generations...

I mean, I wouldnt want to play 1e right now!

grumbles as he climbs upon the soap box

Pushing the game into digital first, would be an error. I was out of town, and went into one of my typical large book stores, and I was stunned at the number of older teens/young 20s there. They are not buying e-books, and they are FILLING the Fantasy and Sci-Fi section. I couldnt get down some of the rows!

I do not think people want more reason to be tied to their phone. There would seem to be (I do not have market data!) a push towards things that are 'real' in our hands again.

(Ironically said as I type on a laptop with a person who may or may not exist...but do I exist....noooooooooooooooooo....)

Those kids were waiting for you to leave to shoot videos for their sites ;)

On a more serious note that comment sounds a lot more like, “I wish this to be true” than “ I reasonably believe it to be true”. But what do I k ow?
