[SBLOCK=OOC]I'll note that Alys got an average result--she may as well have taken 10. Just not as big a fan of the Spot skill as most other people tend to be :D[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=DM Note]I often use skill checks to stimulate activity over a period of time. For example, this check represents looking through the crowd over a period of time; the better the result, the more quickly you find whom you are looking for.[/sblock]

[SBLOCK=OOC]I do that too, but I generally use Search, not Spot, for just what you described. Hopefully Alys's 21 Gather Info is helpful in finding him quickly.[/SBLOCK]

[SBLOCK=OOC]Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. In my mind, 'looking around' is a function of Spot, while 'scrutinizing, testing, prodding, and poking things' is a function of Search. It's all good.

In my games, Gather Information is one of the most useful skills you can ever have. Just sayin'. ;)[/SBLOCK]

[SBLOCK=OOC]Yup, for me, I think the only more useful skill than Gather Info all around (and it isn't really a skill) is Bardic Knowledge, since you don't have to spend time to roll it. I like to use Spot initially and Search for the longer looking around because I imagine that someone who is diligent and methodical will find what they want first (by not retreading covered ground, etc)[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=ooc]Not a class skill for any of the three classes I'm planning on taking. Also, while it's good to have someone with the skill, it's not a skill where it helps a lot to be second best in the party... one person with the skill is usually enough. As important as it can be, that's enough for me to decide it's someone else's job.

While I value Gather Information, I also must admit in most campaigns I've been in it is only theoretically usefull. If no one has it, the DM still manages to give out enough info to move the plot along. :)[/sblock]

[SBLOCK=OOC]Oh, I totally dig it. You only really need one guy who is good at being a face if the entire party is up and functioning properly. Likewise, with the whole "DM gives you plot stuff" opinion - most DMs I know operate that way. I won't deny that I do (especially in PbP), but my players can attest that they definitely get more benefit for having it than not.[/sblock]

[SBLOCK=OOC]I like to give the players cool extras with Gather Info and Knowledge if they do well. They might barely manage to scrape together more of the plot without it (and take a longer time in doing so) so that they can proceed, but if they want a greater understanding of the mysteries and what is at work in my game, rather than blindly fighting their way along (which is not to say that blindly fighting things is necessarily a wrong playstyle), they would do well to have lots of Knowledge and Gather Info in my games[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=OOC]For me, its always been Spot=Quick or cursory glance, visual search; Search=Intentional examination, physical search. So "I look at the body for anything valuable" is Spot, "I examine the body" is Search.[/sblock]

After an hour of scanning crowds and asking around, Alysina's questioning of passerbys lead them to a section of Bargedown that is a bit less busy. A grizzled sailor indicates that Irontusk was unloading some smaller boats at the Underhang. Krontigard knows exactly where the Underhang is, and leads the five there quickly.

The Underhang is so-named because one of Sharn's towers rises at an angle over the water. Access to the wharfs is through several tunnels that bore through the tower directly onto the river. It's not as hectic as the rest of Bargedown, but it the passages through the towers are still packed with sailors, laborers, doxies, and other disreputable characters.

Krontigard steps out on the dock and looks around. He cups his hands around his mouth and shouts, "Hey, Irontusk! There are people here to see you!"

Several small boats away, a green-skinned half-orc with an iron spike in his jaw and a red bandanna stands and looks towards the sound of Krontigard's shout. Seeing several armed figures, including a gnome wearing the outfit of a Morgrave student, he drops the sack in his hand and turns, attempting to move away from the lot of them!
