    Monte on Character Creation

I like his last point The fact that there are 'builds' for characters and one needs to pick feats, etc. in a specified order is IMO, one of 3.X/Pathfinder's biggest failings. I would like a game where I didn't have to have any idea what my character would be like at high level -- where what...

Novels with extensive D&D-style ruin/dungeon exploration?

Tombs of Atuan It's a distant memory, but my recollection is that Ursula K. Leguin's Tomb's of Atuan (from the Earthsea Trilogy I believe) fits this bill. Ken

    Bait-n-switch or screwjob campaigns

Yes The best campaign I ever ran, which involved my PCs being shipwrecked on an uncharted island while abandoning a failed colony on a ship basically captained by pirates, was a total bait and switch. I wanted the campaign to be about people thrown into an unfamiliar environment and dealing...

Best old style AD&D dungeon crawlers ever

Dark Tower What about Dark Tower? It was always my favorite back in the day. Ken

    Slavicsek to leave WotC

Thanks for TORG! I had a great deal of fun running TORG... the Drama Deck was a great innovation that I always thought ought to have made it into the mainstream. Ken

    Degrees of Success / Failure

Well It was certainly around as far back as RuneQuest, which had the concept of fumbles, successes, special successes, and critical sucesses on pretty much all rolls. Ken

    Leverage RPG play report

Wow I have a good friend who is a staff writer on Leverage. He's played D&D with me in the past, and apparently several other writers on that show (and the showrunner I believe) play D&D. I assume they were involved in the creation of the Leverage RPG? I'm going to have to tell my friend...

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

Wow I leave these boards for a few weeks, and look what happens! Merric, leading the charge against WoTC. Who would have thought it? Welcome to the Dark Side, Merric!

The Dungeons & Dragons Virtual Table

Well I don't know anything about the monster/character builder problems, but I'm curious about this. I've thought WoTC needed a VTT for a long time, and in my book being a lot like Maptools is a good thing. Could someone with access to this thing post a thread comparing and contrasting it...

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

Wow What an insanely cool ad! Then again, I am definitely the target audience -- I associate the sound of Led Zepellin with old memories of playing RPGs at my friend's house. Ken

    Subscription levels dropping

OK, what I see here is 1) you ask why I don't subscribe 2) I answer you, critically, but politely. 3) you dismiss my answer and imply that my past behavior has been bad. 4) Another moderator calls out a whole class of reasons someone might not want to subscribe to EnWorld as not germane to...

    Subscription levels dropping

Well Maybe you should become a Community Supporter then, Lanefan. It sounds like EnWorld is everything you want it to be. Ken

    Subscription levels dropping

subscribing I let my subscription lapse awhile back, sometime during the 4E switchover. To be honest, since switching to Pathfinder I find that I spend the bulk of my time on the Paizo boards. 4E threads don't really interest me, and what's left on EnWorld is pretty thin these days, compared...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide Preview

prestige classes I used to like prestige classes too. But, they have an unfortunate side effect. Because their entry requirements can be stringent, they encourage 'the build' -- the character that is planned out from level 1 to 20 at the start. I really hate this -- I think that PC choices...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide Preview

Agreed I liked the latest preview too. I'm really glad that Paizo is deemphasizing prestige classes in favor of alternate class features. Hopefully it will elmininate the necessity of character 'builds' in favor of a more organic process. Ken
