How did the drow become the drow?

First Post
Does anyone have any idea how the Crown Wars happened in forgotten realms. Like specifically what happened to cause the drow to become evil and be forced underground. Was it an action of Lloth against the Seldarine? I've never seen a good answer to this or any detailed explanation and was curious if anyone knew of any.

Yeah, it was Lolth's betrayal of Corellon Larethian. Corellon cast Lolth and their son Vhaeraun out of Arvandor, and the Illythiiri, the elves who followed them, into the Underdark. In doing this, he changed their skins to reflect the black of their hearts. This can be found in the novel Evermeet: Island of the Elves, by Elaine Cunningham. It should be noted that the drow were dark-skinned even before their exile, being inhabitants of the southern climes.

Hmm, perhaps this should be in the ask Col. Pladoh thread, since Gary is the one who made up the drow, whole cloth, in the first place.

On the other hand, it's got the FR post icon, and Gygax hasn't written a word of Forgotten Realms material.

But what did Lloth do to betray the Seldarine? That's what I'm curious about.
Also where can I find the ask colpladoh thread I'm kinda new.

In FR, Lloth tried to kill Correllon and she also brought many of the evil gods and evil monster gods into Arvandor to wage war within Arvandor. She also tricked her and Corellon's daughter (Eilistraee) into almost slaying Corellon and Eilistraee exiled herself from Arvandor because of this.

That was why Eilistraee had a different planar realm if you use the Wheel/Ring. Now for some reason she's returned to Arvandor, but WOTC has not given us a reason why she has a deity realm within Arvandor in the new FR planes.

Most of this can be found in the Evermeet novel by Elaine Cunningham. Parts can also be found in the Cormanthyr sourcebook found for free on the link below.

Thought you might enjoy this - and I get a free plug out of it... :D From our upcoming supplement, Blood and Shadow: the Dark Elves of Tellene. There was divine intervention in the drow exile, but they didn't turn black automatically, as the surprised mother can tell you...

also if you believe the novels written for the FR you will find information on how the Sahaugin...aka Sea Devils...are another race of elves. ;)

Realms of the Deep edited by Philip Athans and the series by Mel Odom provide some more information.

It was mostly during the last of the crown wars...

In -10000 the Drow massed for the final battle, and Lolth covered the land in loathsome clouds of black to strike fear in the hearts of mortal Elves. With the aid of Lolth they struck a mighty blow against Miyetar, the nation of the green elves - decimating that race and driving the survivors into a reclusive and barbarian existence deep within the forests of Faerun. The Drow were prepared to win—but then the gods themselves intervened.

Corellon Larethian and his companions struck deep into the heart of Drow territory. Long and hard they fought, seeking the evil in that land. Finally, Corellon Larethian came upon the dread Spider Queen, and he attacked. Magic flared and spat; blood merged in rivulets. Then Corellon struck Lolth a telling blow, driving her deep into the earth. With her defeat, the haze over the battlefield lifted, allowing the bright light of the sun to bathe the land in its healing rays.

Corellon’s magic, as directed through his priests and High Mages, transformed the dark elves, whether the corrupt Ilythiiri or others. The Drow turned their faces away from the sun's purification, preferring instead their fallen goddess. They consciously chose the shadows over light. Some tales (especially those told by Drow on other worlds) tell us that Corellon decreed that such treachery would forever show upon their faces, and is for this reason that the skin of the Drow is dark.

Because, remember children and never forget, dark skin is a sign of evil. Only light-skinned people are good.

Bah.
