One of my few real disappointments with 5e so far is the lack of more interesting options for the find steed spell. (More exotic creatures, flying creatures, etc.) But of course, I don't want it to be stupidly unbalanced.
I just sort of came up with this off the top of my head, and I'm wondering what people think, or if there are any problems I'm missing.
1) Find steed now gains more power if you cast it in a higher level slot. You can summon a steed of a CR equal to the slot level -1. Thus, as a 1st-level spell, you can only do 1/2 CR creatures or lower (like a warhorse). As a 2nd-level spell, you can summon a CR 1 creature, etc. Up to a CR 4 mount as a 5th-level slot.
2) Mounts with fly speeds count as one CR higher for these purposes. Thus, though a pegasus is only CR 22, you have to treat it as a CR 3, and thus use a 4th-level slot to summon it.
3) Because this can be a massive advantage over a simple warhorse, there's a price tag attached. You have to renew the spell every day, rather than it lasting until the mount is killed or dismissed. Thus, you're essentially trading one of your spell slots for a tougher/more useful mount.
Thoughts?
