Paladin's mount options

There's no associated cost with calculating it off proficiency bonus, though, and it needs one. :) Also, with the exception of cantrips, the game's designed so that spells increase in power based on slot, not level of caster.

After all the silliness I've dropped in this thread...I actually think the solution you've come up with is pretty good.

My sole problem with the Paladin's mount- across all editions- is that I personally can't decide whether the thing should be a living animal like the Paladin who summoned it, a magical version of the same, summoned from a different plane of existence, or it is a pure divine conjuration.
 

Well, IIRC, back in 1E and 2E the paladin actually had to quest for it, going off to find his/her mount. So in those circumstances, at least, I always assumed the mount was a real, living being that just had a spiritual link of some sort with the paladin.

(Of course, the mounts I gave out in such campaigns included, among other things, 1) an animated iron statue of a warhorse, and 2) a giant monarch butterfly, so my opinions on the matter should probably not be construed as the final authority.) ;)
 

I've actually used all 3 options- living, living otherplanar, and divine magical constructs- in each edition of D&D, in different campaigns.
 


I forget the name of it, but in Dungeon Magazine they had a solo adventure for a paladin's mount quest. I ran it for the paladin that was in my group (the only one I ever DMed). In it, the mount was actually a magical amulet, that was worn when the mount was not needed. I thought it was a handy way to keep the mount nearby if it was ever needed, and not "just outside, with everyone else's horses".
