D&D 5E (IC) Vault of the Dracolich (River Gang)

Location: Temple Storeroom and Prison

Encounter: Three Beast Boy Mercenaries and 2 Dragon Cult Adepts

Surprise Round

Udit shoots an unwary mercenary in the back. Before he even has a chance to react, Darko hits him in the back of the head with an Eldritch Blast. The results are not pretty, and the man slumps forward on the table while the others stare in confusion. It takes the other two a moment to realize what is happening and then they both move at once, kicking over their chairs and standing up.

Aquaria enters the mind of a mercenary intending to harm him, but the first thing she finds is shocking and she breaks the connection. Auraia decides that is disgusting (not knowing the specifics) so she shoots the man with her crossbow.

Kurzon rushes up to the iron portcullis and heaves with all his might; it doesn't move.

GM: Auraia, Darko, and Udit can go for round one. I will resolve rounds on the bad guy's turn, so Kurzon and Aquaria will have to wait for the begining of round two to act. It sounds like you miss a turn, but you don't. I hope you get what I mean. Remember that you are in darkness, so you can't see each other, and the enemy can't see you. The enemy is in bright light; the left side of the map is in dim light.

OOC: Sorry, I forgot that Drako is beside Kurzon. I will adjust next time. Oh, and that puts them in the dim light of the lantern, but with cover from the iron bars.

OOC: Someone in darkness can still block light from beyond and silhouette themselves but since Kurzon and Draco are now in dim light this point is moot.

Udit choked a curse as Kurzon and Draco rushed to the gate. But there was still an opening, and they would distract the foes... excellent. He shifted his position to line up the injured mercenary and the opening, and let loose his arrow.

Ooc: rolls incoming

OOC: Oh, you mean that you could have seen Kurzon and Draco, even if the portcullis wasn't in dim light? Yeah, that's true, they would make a silhouette of their backs, I meant more looking across at each other taking cover behind the walls. At any rate, the River Gang has a distinct advantage in this fight.

OOC: The onus for cover in 5e is on the defender, (their AC goes up) so you hit an 18, but it works either way as long as we don't double-up. Nice hit! These guys are in trouble!

Round One

Auraia fires her crossbow, but the quarrel hits the portcullis and deflects into the hallway.

Udit shoots a mercenary in the shoulder, who is seriously wounded. Both mercenaries flip the table and drive it forward, taking cover behind it and the corner of the room.

Darko fires an eldritch blast at an Adept, who grunts in pain. Darko sees movement on his right; a shadowy figure in a cage, who's laughter can only just be heard over the hullibaloo.

"Get a light over there!" yells the other Adept, who then mumbles something in old draconic, and dragon scales shimmer magically around his injured companion, "They can't harm you, go!" He then runs out of sight.

The injured Adept closes his eyes and an object in his hand begins to glow. He rushes forward behind the table (perhaps not trusting his ally) and throws the object, which clatters to the floor when it hits the portcullis; a pair of pliers.

GM: They still haven't been able to attack you! Adept2 has Sanctuary on him. You need to roll a dc12 Wisdom Save to be able to attack him. The other Adept is out of line-of-sight and has total cover (he can't be targeted).
The two Mercenaries have 3/4 cover (+5 to their AC). You don't need to worry about that, but I thought you might like to know. Everybody can go for round two.

Kurzon gives up on the gate for the moment and reaching down, grabs he pliers.

"Now, now!" he grins and throws it back into the room just behind the table.
