PATHFINDER UNCHAINED at GAMA?

It's not available for over a month yet, but Paizo developer Jason Bulmahn is - along with most of the tabletop gaming industry - at the GAMA trade show in Las Vegas, and appears to have a finished copy of Pathfinder Unchained. This is Paizo's "experimental" book - it's Unearthed Arcana, if you will, although many people prefer to label it as a "Pathfinder 2 Testbed" (not that there's any hint that such a thing exists). "Within these pages, the designers of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game unleash their wildest ideas, and nothing is safe. From totally revised fundamentals like core classes and monster design to brand-new systems for expanding the way you play, this book offers fresh ideas while still blending with the existing system." Due April 29th. Or right now, if you find Jason Bulmahn in Las Vegas.

"Pathfinder 2 Testbed" (not that there's any hint that such a thing exists).

Of course there's "no hint" that such a thing exists. Pathfinder was born from an edition change and people chose Pathfinder because they *didn't* want to change editions. If Paizo announced Pathfinder 2.0, the Pathfinder fans would be up in arms, or divided at least.

I look at all the Paizo stuff that's been released now and I cant help but wonder what the bursting point is for them. Their system is busting at the seams with content; that's not a bad thing, but it's unsustainable. At some point they're going to have to bite the bullet, condense the material and refine the systems they have in place.

Pathfinder 2.0 wouldn't be a bad thing. I just don't think the fanbase would embrace it.

Why 2.0 and not 1.5? A more compatible system would certainly appease a lot of fan while correcting some stuff.

I have no interest in the Pathfinder rules but I will make an exception for this book. I'm excited to see if they've been able to make some big leaps "forward" in design.

This will probably be the last rules-based hardback I will buy for Pathfinder. I just have more rules and options than I could ever possibly use at this point. The content of this book will also probably determine whether I continue playing Pathfinder (which I like primarily because of the adventure support, not the rules) or make a wholesale shift to 5e. If this book can address enough of Pathfinder's flaws (most of which IMO come from backwards compatibility with 3.5e), I might be convinced to stick around.

More specifically, they didn't want to change to D&D 4th Edition. It's much less clear that they didn't want to change editions at all.

It really depends on how it was handled. Paizo have a very good relationship with their fans as a result of years of hard work, so that where WotC's every communication is met with a litany of complaints, Paizo's equivalent is usually met by a chorus of adulation. So provided they engage with their fans as they have been, and provided they don't unilaterally change too much, they'll probably be okay.
