 PRESS RELEASE

Mantic Games is excited to announce that it is partnering with Dark Horse Comics and visionary creator Mike Mignola to bring Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game to Kickstarter this summer. Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game will be a whole new way to explore the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. universe while creating your own spectacular one-off stories or action-packed chronicles.

Powered by the world’s most popular RPG ruleset, Fifth Edition, Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game gives you the tools to step into the shoes of a B.P.R.D. agent, ready to face the forces of evil. You can become a field researcher skilled in the study of the occult, a hard-nosed B.P.R.D. security agent, a rookie with hidden supernatural powers, and more…. The choice is yours.

Developed by Red Scar Publishing, Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game is being led by ENnie Award-winning writer and game developer Marc Langworthy, who has worked on Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition Roleplaying Game, Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD Roleplaying Game, and the Conan: Adventures in An Age Undreamed Of Roleplaying Game.

Once the Kickstarter launches, you will be able to try the roleplaying game for yourself with a detailed quickstart that features six pre-generated characters, all the rules needed to play, and a unique adventure inspired by the Hellboy graphic novels, written by Red Scar.

“We can’t wait to bring Hellboy back to Kickstarter,” said Ronnie Renton, CEO of Mantic Games. “The roleplaying game is going to be a fantastic new way to experience Hellboy on the tabletop. The team at Red Scar has done an amazing job of capturing the feel of the Hellboy universe. Plus, your miniatures from Hellboy: The Board Game will be compatible with the RPG, which will bring a whole new lease of life to your awesome mini collection.”

Mantic Games launched Hellboy: The Board Game on Kickstarter in 2018 and raised almost two million dollars during the campaign. The board game is a co-operative experience in which players face off against some of the comic’s most famous foes. Up to four people take control of iconic B.R.P.D. members––Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Johann Kraus––before exploring gothic locations, uncovering ancient artefacts, and battling one of Hellboy’s most notorious foes, Rasputin! After launching at retail last year, the game is now available in multiple languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian) and is on its fourth reprint after selling out worldwide.

5E is the most popular rpg system out there. And others have probably seen that since DND lately has been selling/doing like hot cakes.

Doesn't bother me.

Gnometown Hero
Or are more familiar with it.
That's actually not a great recommendation for giving someone a license.

"We don't have broad expertise in game design, but we are really well-versed in one system that, let's be honest, doesn't really jump out at you as suited for this particular license."

If I was really well-versed in Toon, and nothing else, I wouldn't try and leverage that into getting the John Wick RPG license.

We know Hellboy can know out even an elephant with a single punch. He is too strong to be a PC in d20. And he is totally inmune to fire damage.

And I have said lots of time d20 system isn't ready yet for the right power balance with firearms. Do you remember survival horror games as "the evil within" or "Resident Evil"? When the PC has got enough weapons and ammo the stealth ends and the shooting start. And players are too used earning XPs killing enemies than investigating about the monster of the week.

Sometimes I wonder about the next evolution of the d20 system, with two different pillars of leveling up, one would be the classic one (+hit points and bonus to save and attack) and the othe would be "storytelling points" spent to unlock slots in a "talent tree". This would allow d20 high-school superheroes very powerful but they have to learn a lot of things, or weak all-know characters (Matrix or Altered Carbone) thanks to mind uploading, or investigators as Serlock Holmes with a high cultural level. Then killing enemies the PC becomes stronger, but only completing investigation quests become wiser.

I just discovered that Mantic has been posting further details to their blog over the past several days since the game was announced.
Highlights:

—My guess was right, you can play either as an original character or as Hellboy, Liz, etc.

—Players have pools of “ingenuity” points, and the GMs have a pool of “doom” points, respectively to be spent to advance or hinder the party’s goals. (The GM doom points in particular seem to me like a throwback to GM-as-adversary designs not usually associated with 5e games.)

—Not only the miniatures but also the custom dice from the board game can be used. Apparently even the dice are optional, though.

—D&D races have been replaced by “origins,” including Remarkable Human and Ghost.

—D&D classes have been replaced by “roles.” Apart from the total number of roles in the game (six), not much info here yet.

—A sample character sheet is shown for a Remarkable Human (origin) - Field Agent (role) - Professional (background) - Team Leader (archetype, I’m assuming this is like a subclass). A bunch of abilities are shown, as well as some interesting mechanical changes, such as injury levels and several new skills (Steady Hands, Science, Occult, Bureaucracy). Multiple references to something called “focus checks.”

Overall, an intriguing set of details, indicating this definitely isn’t just going to be a straightforward D&D retheme.

ART!

Deluxe Unhuman
Well, you can't really blame them for bolting an IP onto the most popular tabletop role-playing game, that one of their subsidiaries conveniently publishes. ;)

And who knows, maybe one or more of the new features in this game will become wildly popular and make its way into 5E/6E/whatever.

I got no probs with Hellboy himself making a cameo appearance or helping the players out as a special character on certain missions.

Awards an Inspiration Token to the player that pets one of Hellboy's cats

Or make it a Downtime Activity.
