Reaper Bones 6 - Tales from the Green Griffin

I haven’t painted more than a half dozen of my bones 1 miniatures. Bought paint and everything, partially painted a couple, they looked great, they never set in a non tacky way, and put them away and haven’t touched the paints since.

I mean, mostly because I moved and don’t have space to set up and paint, but still…

Not having space to paint is a pain. Being able to leave everything set up so you can just sit down and paint when you want takes away a big disincentive. I don't have the space either. Even if I did I couldn't leave things out as I have cats who love grabbing minis and running away with them.

Yeah and I just hate clutter, as well. Adding more would just…oof. I’m glad there are so many different miniatures for folks out there tho. Maybe someday I’ll be able to get back into painting.

I’m not a fan of Wizkids and their price gouging practices of late. I’ve been buying bones for a while now but I find the gooped on Primer far more frustrating than any issues with any Bones material because when you get all that gunk off Wizkids gaps are extremely egregious.
What price gouging? I got this bad boy, a Nolzur's Marvelous Unpainted Adult White Dragon for $40 though I think their own webstore says it's $70. Tiamat's a bit pricy at $350 for the unpainted version, but then I purchase a lot of Games Workshop miniatures so that doesn't seem too expensive to me.

One thing I like is having choices of styles. For example, I don’t really like the WizKids bugbears, but I love the reaper ones. On the other hand, I love the WizKids umber hulk. But in the end, reaper kick starters are such a good way to kickstart a collection…

Ma’Al Drakar is about the same size as Tiamat and is half that price. They are selling 7 Orcs for 50 bucks, GW sells 20 orcs for $50. The plastic is cheap garbage on the prepainted minis filled with mold lines and gaps that has caked on primer to filled in that gaps. Price gouging. You think 350 is a fair price for Tiamat compared to Dungeons & Lasers? Bones? Or even the new GW dragon for the Stormcast army? No.

I forgot about those new orcs and especially the kobolds and I can't disagree there, those aren't great prices. I won't be buying those products. I think $350 is fair for Tiamat because it's a centerpiece model with a fairly limited customer base. I'm more likely to purchase Ma'Al Drakar, if it ever becomes available again, but if I ever see Tiamat for a significant discount, like $200-250, I'll probably pick it up.

Bones sometimes reacts poorly with aerosol primer ("rattlecans"). Not always, but often enough that they recommend against using it. Brush-on primer or airbrushed primer works fine.

I've had good luck applying primer with my airbrush.
Airbrush primer works great. The problem is aerosol primer. More specifically, the propellants used which often react poorly with the PVC in Bones miniatures.

And it doesn't always do that. Can be related to different propellants used, but also to distance from the can, temperature, humidity, and whatever else. Basically, rattlecans work fine unless they don't.

I can personally attest to this. I used rattlecans on a maybe 20-30 of the Bones minis. In a few cases (3 or 4?) it resulted in the mini feeling weird, sort of tacky, to the touch. You could still feel it even after another coat of paint.
