In my Dungeon of the Mad Mage campaign, I decided to add a Super Mario easter egg in the form of a myconid sprout wearing a gold-trimmed blue vest, white pants, and brown boots who occasionally offers the PCs the chance to "pick a box". Sometimes they get something cool (like a necklace of prayer beads) and other times they get something OK (like a potion of healing). This creature usually appears after the PCs have completed one of Halaster's tasks.
The creature is due to appear again soon. This time, its boxes will contain an edible mushroom that functions as a potion of growth, an edible 'fire flower' that functions as a potion of fire breath, and a starfruit that functions as a potion of invulnerability.
Previously I had only described the creature, and so far, none of my players have caught on. But now I thought I could try to make a picture. My first attempts were a little too on the nose, but I think I'm starting to make some progress.
Still too obvious, I suppose ...
I think my favorite so far is the last one (bottom right).
