In all honesty, I think many of the "failed" attempts at beholders I've seen around here -- including this one -- are much better than the official design.

So I have been taking a crack at combining the idea of the Cleric Beast from Bloodborne with the various cleric domains to create some fun creatures.
Once devout followers of the gods of the Astral Sea, these poor souls were cursed by Baphomet the Demon Prince of Beasts to become horrid monstrosities known as Cleric Beasts. Blind both physically and spiritually due to a plate infused with demonic energies that is bolted to the upper part of their head, these tormented souls cry out in agony, seeking some sort of comfort from the divine presence they once served or any other being even as their maddening and torturous state causes them to lash out at all who draw near them. An old legend states that should one show mercy enough to brave the Cleric Beast's onslaught and somehow remove the accursed metal mask, that the creature will be filled with such relief and reverence for their salvation, that these mighty creatures will serve their savior to their dying breath.
