Its weird when in some cases you end up there without even remembering engaging with them though; you have to assume at some point something about one of your posts, whether it was point or demeanor, just did not go well as far as they were concerned.

I have to admit I don't like getting on people's ignore lists. OTOH, I managed to get ignored by someone with less than 40 posts over 10 years who I have never interacted with, and ignored by someone else the first time I ever responded to them (with what I still think was a pretty innocuous reply). And for obvious reasons you can't PM someone who ignored you to ask what you did wrong. So, life goes on.

The concept of ignore lists is fine. If you don't want to listen to someone's nonsense, why should you? The implementation on this site, though, leaves something to be desired in my opinion. If someone decides that someone else's post are just too disturbing/alarming/boring/eyerolling/noisy, they should be free to have that person's posts disappear from the site for them, and to have that person lose the ability to respond to their posts.

I don't philosophically agree with doing this; to me, part of life is recognising that not everyone is like you or will agree with you, or you with them. It's better to recognise those differences, and if not embrace and learn from them, at least accept that they exist and move on. Sticking your fingers in your ears and pretending they're not there... that is weird to me.

Having said that, I fully support someone's right to ignore someone else. I think it's a poor decision, but that's neither here nor there; the point is, it's your decision.

Where the implementation goes off course on this site though, is that the ignorer's decision suddenly impacts the ignoree's ability to enjoy the website. Because of someone else's choice, suddenly, blank spots appear in threads, making it difficult to follow the flow of conversation.

Could we disable the reciprocal behaviour of the ignore feature? @Morrus @Umbran @Dannyalcatraz

The first few paragraphs of this Thomas Ligotti story, where the narrator characterizes his experience of the world up through his reaction to the shop across the street, are something I think of when forums fatigue me, and I’m delighted to share them (and the rest of the story, too).

I think the reciprocal ignore is itself also a choice. Unless the feature has changed, it's up to the ignorer if they want to become invisible to whoever they're blocking. I believe the intended use case for two-way Ignore is to shut down stalking, but how people actually use it is up to them.

There have been a number of Meta threads about this. Here's the initial sticky thread on the topic:

We now have the ability for mutual blocking (again!) -- if you ignore somebody, you are also (optionally) able to block them from seeing your content.

That said, there is one exception. If you start a thread, your initial post is not ignored. This allows people to block each other but doesn't give them the ability to kick them out of threads in which they may be engaged in conversation with other people (plus also the people I block can still read the news page).

You will find controls for the ignore system in your account settings...
