Sinners (2025)

So I just got back from Ryan Coogler-directed Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan (twice!), and with a lot of other fun actors like Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku (you'll probably recognise her even if you don't know the name), Jack O'Connell and even Delroy Lindo in a rare comedic turn (which he is of course strong in).

I won't spoil it too much, but I loved it, it was kind of a good B (grade) sort of movie until it kept going at the point where most movies would have ended. Twice. So don't walk out of cinema just because the credits start rolling, as two couples at my screening foolishly did! The period style and music rules, as do the performances, editing, ideas (a lot of cool ideas), and visuals. I think they primarily used physical FX, which, whilst imperfect, I feel like I prefer (and some of the non-physical ones had a slightly 1990s/2000s vibe, which somehow actually worked with the whole thing). It had some stuff that surprised me in a good way, which I always want to see from a genre movie. Also a couple of trope subversions that were actually clever/fun. Overall I'd say solid A for me.

It's definitely gory and alarming, so if you're not into that, stay away!

I'd link the trailer, but I'd kind of recommend not watching the trailer (as is the case with most horror movies, honestly) unless you're good at forgetting them.

Spoilers lore/mythos commentary for those who have seen it or never will - the vampire mythos here was fairly standard (i.e. in the "Blade" zone) in terms of vulnerabilities/weaknesses, though it appears making someone come back as a vampire might involve saliva transfer as well as biting them - unclear, but with some nice additions, like linking them to the Fey generally (and vaguely), making them obsessed with musicians - or more specifically what we might call bards (from all cultures - they use griot, for example). We also saw a form of the very rarely seen vampire hivemind! I can't even remember the last time I saw that! Probably in a 1990s RPG or maybe it was Life Force or maybe a Kim Newman novel or something? And the Irish "master" vampire was interesting in that he clearly had significantly greater powers (flight, much tougher, claws when he wants them) and implied he was from pre-Christian Ireland, which for some reason is a flourish I always love. Also not really lore but those 1992 outfits hell yes, they basically stepped straight out of V:tM.

I saw it tonight. I absolutely loved it. I don't have much to add, because you already pretty much covered everything in your post. I'll just say that the slow-burner in the first part was really great and it drew me in the setting and made me care about the characters. And I'll reiterate: do not leave until the end of the credits.

That's a sound review. I'll say that you can leave when you want; anything after the credits start is going to be an epilogue, and it's a reasonable position not to care about those (the first one is probably worth staying for, the second might well not be).

Saw Sinners two weeks ago and it's still bouncing around in my head. Easily one of the best movies I've seen this decade. Agree with @prabe that the epilogue is good but not essential for the story, though it does put an interesting twist on the overall theme of the film and what the vampire's represent. Highly recommended, and if you can see it in IMAX (I think it will get some screenings back after Thunderwhatever this weekend) do, as there is some brilliant aspect ratio change work throughout the film.

I saw this on Saturday and absolutely loved it. Great performances, good writing, incredible music.

The music in particular is so good and so central that if you don't watch it with good sound I think it's going to be a loss. Still a great movie, but I am definitely pushing friends to watch it in the theater.
Very good point about the music.

Also, but this applies only abroad, I'm glad that I've seen in in English. It would have been a shame to lose all the excellent language work.

Knew absolutely nothing about this movie, didn't know it was coming, started hearing about it on social media, knew it was a horror movie, and that was literally it.

I thought it was wonderful. The music, the set design, the history, the costuming, it all blended together beautifully into something really original, IMO. I think one part kind of dragged 2/3rds of the way through, but the whole is fantastic. Truly makes me think it's time to just avoid any and all trailers on movies because watching something completely unprepared is a great feeling.

If you look on the multiple layers part, the epilogue is definitely needed. Think about the time that both said they were the happiest and what that meant? It needed to be said as a punctuation to the statement, IMO. There's a lot of commentary in the movie- some less subtle than others. And there's a lot of layers- it's one of the best handling of 'passing' that I've seen in a recent movie and what that actually means and how it makes you more of an outsider, even though you can 'theoretically' fit in both sides.

The epilogue actually retextualizes the vampires a bit. Where we are shown in the movie nothing but bloody thirty murderous vampires, the couple at the end are notably restrained…suggesting not quite the cursed bloody thirsty life implied in the core movie.

But…the fact that for all the times he has lived, stacks favorite memory is still of back in the day with his brother…suggests that maybe eternal life isn’t all it’s cracked up to me.
