I find the art done by Don Maitz to be inspiring and always something worthwide. The covers he did for the Magician Aprentice book by Raymond E. Feist was spoke volumes about setting out on that first adventure, map in hand, getting a few last words of advice from his mentor.

I agree with all of thee above, all make statements about adventuring and learning.

1ed MM - the pic with the adventurers, kobolds, and other creatures, with someone getting skewered by a piercer. I think that's the gist of it. I haven't seen that pic in a while, so I don't remember it exactly.

Definitely the BoVD Orcus, with his "rippling pectoral muscles!" :D

Some of WAR's things just don't have a style appropriate to the monster. A Satyr shouldn't look like impending doom from hell, and a Blink Dog shuoldn't, either, IMHO...

Elmore seems quite static and 'posing' to me...

Add that a lot of 1e art just reminds me of He-Man and Merlin, I can't think of that as especially defining to me...

Those new adds are pretty sweet, though. They're not getting rid of any of the old iconics, I thought, so that's probably not it...

But yeah, my first reaction when I saw the man with the staff was "Buckles?! Buckles, is that you?! I mean, Hennet?" He looks pretty bad ass in this, not awkward at all...

I'm thinkin the elf with the bow is Mialee, and Gimble's the one on the side...

Agreed. The ad art for the 3.5 books blew my mind!!! Kinda like the time I saw my Grandmother in the shower...oh never mind!!!

Yeah that one is cool. Isn't it supposed to be Iuz's sister?

It is a great drawing. AFAIK, it was originally seen in the 1st edition module S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. It's Drelenza, Iggwilv's daughter.

I admit my Greyhawk-fu is a bit rusty - but I don't think Iuz and Iggwilv ever concieved a child, so I don't know if Iuz is supposed to be her father.
