The current state of fantasy literature

To answer your first sentence. Why? Why is it a false dichotomy? Admittedly, there are those who read for both reasons. But I have been around long enough to notice that more often the two camps don't meet. For instance, those who do it for some kind of intellectual stimulation tend to be...

The current state of fantasy literature

It was something about the tone of the website that I found offensive. I have trouble putting it into words, I just felt he came across as feeling like he was superior to those with "less discerning taste". Just a gut feeling really.

The current state of fantasy literature

I really think alot of this debate boils down to two different types of readers. Readers who do so for some kind of intellectual stimulation and those who do it for enjoyment. I belong to the second type. I will read any book I enjoy. If I enjoy it enough I will read it more than once. I have...

[Tornado Warning} OKC just hit again!!

I too live in OKC and the scariest moment was hearing that a Tornado may have been about 2 blocks SW of my house heading NE right at the moment the lights went out. It never hit. I'm still not sure if there wasn't one, or if it just went up into the clouds for a bit and came back down later.

    Star Wars - missing rules?

The ghost thing is being explained in Episode 3. In the novelisation for Ep2, when Yoda hears GuiGon's voice while Anakin is killing the Sandpeople is surprised and has a thought like "once a Jedi becomes one with the force, consciousness is gone, so how did QuiGon cry out?" Clearly it's...

(OT) Hmmm Star Wars II Seen I Have!

I saw Ep2 today. Before I continue, I should say I like Ep1, and will go to my grave believing alot of the backlash against it has very little to do with the movie itself, and more to do with changing times and well....bandwagonitis. Anyway, on to Ep2: It rocked. It was Awesome. If i had to...

[OT - SW] Official Episode 2 Opening Week Boycott Thread

Re: Who Cares? You know, can barely express my feelings about this post. Let me just put it in the simplest terms. The post author ( a first time poster nonetheless which makes me suspect it's someone else hiding their real identity) essentially says if you like Phantom Menance and intend to...

[OT - SW] Official Episode 2 Opening Week Boycott Thread

Not gonna boycott it Not going to do it. I see no REASON to do it. I personally liked Ep1 and I think a large part of this backlash against it is because people feel like Star Wars is THEIR universe and George didn't do what they expected. Isn't it interesting how fans can turn so quickly on...

    Note passing

Well the solution is easy, but too late for you. When you start a campaign, insist on a certain tone or feel, so the party is somewhat compatible. Quite bluntly, why would an Assassin, a Necromancer, A good character of ANY kind, and whatever is left ever work together?

OT: Blade II - Spoiler - Opinions?

I liked the movie alot, found it much more entertaining than the first one. As for the combat scenes, and them being filmed in to close, ALOT of movies are doing that in action scenes nowadays and I HATE it. LOTR did it in Moria. Gladiator did it in the opening scene. Some director decided it...

[OT] Am I the only one who is getting excited for Star Wars - Attack of the Clones

Well, all I can say about this, is the poorly written doesn't apply, LoTR was pre-written so to speak. As for subtle fx in FoTR did you miss Galadriel making like a strobe light? The eye of sauron practically slamming itself into Frodo's forehead anytime the ring was on, and any other very...

    Most useless Feat...

My vote was other: It's a feat out of Masters of the Wild. It doubles your threat range against your favored enemy if it can be critted. It doesn't stack with Improved Crit and it's only useful on that one creature type. No point

PCs lack of respect for the 'caste' system of your typical fantasy society

Actually I disagree with this quote. A more proper way to say this would be that the concept of merit-based rank was not present in History. In fantasy, things are totally different. I'd say that quite likely, in a true DnD-like world, that society would be chaotic. People with the power of...

    Evil castle floorplan needed

My players are going on a mission to rescue some NPCs and such from a group of undead holed up in the ruins of a fortress/castle. I've been scouring the web looking for a map of such a place but haven't found anything. The big thing I want is an open area, preferably underground to be used as a...

    What DnD character are you?

I Am A: Chaotic Good Human Bard Fighter

Alignment:
Chaotic Good characters are independent types with a strong belief in the value of goodness. They have little use for governments and other forces of order, and will generally do their own things, without heed to...

    ??? Samwise Gamgee = slave????

Ok, first off. Let's get one thing straight. Black people weren't the only people enslaved. Not even the most recent. Now that that's off my chest. Here's another. Stop going to P.C. schools, go to a school where you learn something. Ok, now, finally. Sam was Frodo's servant. In the...

    D&D 3E/3.5 D&D 3e to be changed to new d20 rules? 4e coming!

My main feedback on your Vp/WP use is as follows. Sneak attack is too powerful if it goes straight to Wound Points. A high level thief could wade through many other characters with little problem. All it takes is using the bluff skill to feint and get in a sneak attack. Also, about your...

    DMPCs, anyone?

I have often run a DMPC and in fact, my players expect it, and tend to enjoy interacting with them. I typically use them to fill a missing spot in the group roster and also to inject a bit of "me" into the game. Really, a DM with experience should have no problem in doing this and not turning...
