Rebutting a fallacy: why I await 5e (without holding my breath)

3e is better designed to produce the kind of gameplay that I enjoy than 4e is. No joke.

Rebutting a fallacy: why I await 5e (without holding my breath)

Every time I see this particular argument being made, I think of the wizard I played in Shackled City. Magnus (a human) took Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot at 1st level. At low levels, he used his crossbow about ten times as often as he cast a spell. He positioned himself well, focused on...

    Archery Full Round Attack

Subtle? Yes. Important? I don't think so.

    Who/what can take class levels?

Oh, there are definitely "rules as written" on this. See Chapter 4 of the Monster Manual. But it pretty much boils down to DM's discretion, which is the most elementary D&D concept of them all.

    Scouts and Mounted Combat-

11 posts in and no one has mentioned the errata? We're slipping, folks... Skirmish cannot be used while mounted. (My personal opinion: it fits the flavor, absolutely, but becomes utterly broken without the errata.)

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 - Masterwork Mounts?

For the same reason there "aren't any" elite-bred rust monsters or umber hulks: "Except where noted otherwise, each creature [in the Monster Manual] is assumed to have the standard array of ability scores before racial adjustments (all 11s and 10s)." MM page 6-7. You certainly could have...

Do you REALLY run settings as "canon"?

I've been using the World of Greyhawk as my campaign setting of preference since it was first published (1980, I believe), and I've never given a flying woodchuck about "canon." The original Gazetteer had just the right amount of detail, in my opinion, and I pretty much cleave to that. I try...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3E versus 3.5E: Weapon Size

All I can say is that you play a very different style of D&D than I do. (And you missed smaller damage dice for weapons.)

    Death Attack, the BIG threat...

"Unfortunately?" Aren't you the DM? Is there some reason that you have to allow this non-core spell in the game? Is there some reason you have to use it?

    Multiple Resist Energies

I'm not saying they're the same rule. I'm saying they're related...in the same way that the rules for attacks of opportunity are related to the rules for normal melee attacks, even though they're under different headers. None of the game's rules exist in a vacuum. Everything has to be read in...

    Nonlethal Damage

If your accumulated nonlethal damage exceeds your current hit points, you're unconscious. So anything that removes nonlethal damage or increases your current hit points will wake you up. I can't think of any non-magical ways to do that except wait for time to pass, but if there, they should work.

    Multiple Resist Energies

I understand your reasoning, but aren't you saying "the rule applies, whether it makes any sense to apply it or not"? Same Effect with Differing Results: The same spell can sometimes produce varying effects if applied to the same recipient more than once. For example, a series of polymorph...

    Multiple Resist Energies

I usually find myself agreeing with Patryn, but in this case, no. The "One Effect Makes Another Irrelevant" rule does not apply to resist energy (cold) and resist energy (fire) (for example) because nothing about being resistant to fire damage has any impact on being resistant to cold damage...

    Handle Animal Skill

From the Handle Animal skill description: "Special: You can use this skill on a creature with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2 that is not an animal, but the DC of any such check increases by 5." It never hurts to read the rules before asking questions about them. :p

Players that just don't *get* the genre

I wasn't there for it, but this is my favorite example of that syndrome: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/186576-going-church-dont-forget-your-sawed-off-shotgun.html

    CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION: Difficult Subject Matter.

Sez who? While I personally don't care to include sexuality in my role-playing, I'm not aware of anything that makes such a game "not D&D." In fact, over the years, I've had several experiences with sex in D&D. If you don't like the subject matter of a thread, don't read it and/or don't post...

    Rules that people/you always forget

As a matter of fact, there are. DMG, page 304: "In normal climates, Medium characters need at least a gallon of fluids and about a pound of decent food per day to avoid starvation. (Small characters need half as much.)" Not quite. DMG, page 304: "A character can go without food for 3 days...

    Heal Check question

Maybe I'm weird, but when I can't find something in the rules, I generally conclude that it's not in the rules. Especially when there's really only one place that particular something would be (like, for example, in the Heal skill description). But I'm probably weird like that.

    Aid Another & Search

It's up to your DM (of course). I will usually allow one person to Aid Another in searching a 5x5-foot area. In some cases, I will allow more people to help. By the book, one person is the designated "actor" and the others all help that person using the Aid Another action. Your group may want to...
