D&D 5E Lolth in D&D Next and Setting Hopping

Forgotten Realms has always been a setting that crossed over with the others. Always. From the beginning, it was explained that pretty much all of its gods and many of its races had migrated here from other worlds. That's why Lolth is in FR at all, as she came from Greyhawk with the drow. This...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E in a non-magical world

Agreed. Not sure I agree. I don't believe medieval Europeans looked to their local priests for miraculous healing; though I am sure they believed Christ and His Apostles performed miracles centuries before, I don't think they expected the same from contemporary clergy. I feel similarly about...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E in a non-magical world

I am actually thinking of converting Reserve Points from the 3E Unearthed Arcana for this purpose (Described here: Reserve Points :: d20srd.org). Makes healing feel limited but allows more continued adventuring. Super-useful, thanks. Though some of the rest of his reply could've been phrased...

    D&D 4E D&D 4E in a non-magical world

Thanks for all the input. I think I am leaning towards the following list: Assassin (Executioner) - Striker Barbarian (Berserker) - Defender/Striker Bard (Skald) - Leader Fighter (Knight) - Defender Fighter (Slayer) - Striker Fighter (Weaponmaster) - Defender Ranger - Striker Ranger...

D&D 5E Removing the Once per Wedding Limit on Solemnization in Weddings in 5e

Sometimes I love the internet. This is one of those times. God bless you all.

    D&D 4E D&D 4E in a non-magical world

If you were going to run D&D in a world without magic (or at least one where magic is rare and subtle), in a setting something like medieval Western Europe, what classes would you include? Would you just do classes with the martial power source and that's it, or do you think there are ways to...

    Custom Character Classes

If you take these two books for 3.5/d20 Modern, and put them together, you could do this pretty easily: The Versatile Hero - POSTMODERN: The Versatile Hero - Big Finger Games | RPGNow.com Fantastic Classes - POSTMODERN: Fantastic Classes - Big Finger Games | RPGNow.com These two books are made...

Help Think up Kickstarter Reward Ideas

Robin Laws (writer on DMG2 and a host of other great RPGs) has a great blog post on this here: Robin D. Laws - Kickfinisher?

    Idea for Magic Passage-Finder

As a standard action, the PC can take a moment to concentrate. They instantly know the location of the 3 nearest secret doors to them, within a distance of 1 mile. Sensing multiple doors would allow the use of entire alternate routes made up of secret passages, which is apparently what the NPC...

WWII: What should my RPG setting be?

To make sure you have the system stuff you need, a game set in the time-period might be good: Godlike, Trail of Cthulhu, and Weird Wars come to mind. For Weird Wars, you'd have to strip out the werewolves and stuff, but that shouldn't be too hard.

    A good romance?

There is a player in my regular group who is always saying we need "more romance" in our games. And by "more", he probably means "any significant element." Usually for us it is just saying a character has a love interest, who can then be occasionally kidnapped or threatened as an in-game...

Leaving The Forgotten Realms for Greyhawk. Any suggestions?

That book really is the place to start, before the boxed sets or anything. Closest thing Greyhawk is likely to see to a full campaign setting treatment (at least until 5E maybe?), and the most dense collection of setting info on Greyhawk as a whole in print.

    Grumble grumble...

There is a great chapter in one of the Gumshoe system books (I think it's Esoterrorists) where they really go into detail about how to have a predetermined trail of clues without it being a railroad. It's funny, because in that system the PCs automatically acquire certain central pieces of info...

    Faster-Paced Initiative

Thread Necromancy: A Simpler Way I took a stab at revamping this system, and think I came up with a simpler version that should move fairly quickly, without quite as much complexity. SEGMENT-BASED INITIATIVE During the first round, initiative is rolled normally, except as follows: 1) Roll a d12...

Target 20 as new to-hit mechanic?

After this thread linked to Mike Mearls's old blog, I poked around some more and looked at when he was running AD&D (not his more recent 1981 D&D rules game). He noted he was using some house rules, including "Delta's Target 20", which I checked out. Basically, it is "Roll d20 + attack bonus +...

GUMSHOE: Night's Black Agents - Tinker Tailor Vampire Die

Just posting again to say how great this campaign sounds, and what an interesting read it has been. I already own the GUMSHOE rules in a few different formats, but this is convincing me that perhaps I need Night's Black Agents as well. P.S. Not a big deal if you don't, but for people like...

Pathfinder 1E HELP: New Classes to Model GoT/SoIaF in Pathfinder

So, I am trying to run a Pathfinder game set in the world of George R.R. Martin's novels (yeah, I know there is already an RPG for that setting, and I think it is awesome, but my players aren't ready to switch over yet). So, I am trying to build some classes for specific roles in the setting...
