    D&D 4E 4e vs Min-Maxers

Communiciation is only one aspect. Min-maxing can only occur with DM fiat. A big part of the problem of min-maxing with 3e is the comprehensiveness of the ruleset. If you discover a min-max 'loophole', your argument versus the DM is that much stronger because the comprehesiveness of the rules...

Is casting a spell with the Evil descriptor an Evil act?

In D&D: evil is not what evil does. Evil is what has the [evil] descriptor, regardless of consequences, intentions, misuse etc.

Why the fear and hatred of Disjunction?

How about the spell halting play for at least 30 minutes (in high level parties) while all magic items and active spells are rolled for one by one to see if they are destroyed by the disjunction? And then the subsequent adjusting of all the stats when players try to account for their lost gear...

    Knockdown & Improved Trip

You can only Trip with a Trip attack. Trip attacks are a subset of melee attacks. In other words, a Trip attack is a melee attack, but that wouldn't solve Hypersmurf's problem. He proposed that a Trip attack isn't a melee attack, because then 'as if' clause of Improved Trip wouldn't give you...

    Knockdown & Improved Trip

You are saying that we should read Improved Trip as '..as if you didn't use your melee attack..', adding the word melee to attack, even though it doesn't say it? And then use the specific differentation between melee attack and trip attack to rule out the extra attack? Either you read it...

    Knockdown & Improved Trip

Hyp: 1. Knockdown gives you a free trip attack. 2. Improved Trip gives you an extra melee attack, as if you had not used your attack to trip. What I am reading wrong? Note that Knockdown doesn't give you a free opposed Trip roll, it gives you a Trip attack. You still must hit with a touch...

    Knockdown & Improved Trip

You never 'use' Improved Trip to trip anyone. You use a Trip attack to trip someone. Improved Trip gives you special advantages on your trip roll and after you trip someone. You cannot choose not to receive +4 from Improved Trip if you use the special attack called Trip. Improved Trip triggers...

    Knockdown & Improved Trip

Simple question: do you get an extra attack from Improved Trip after tripping someone with the Knockdown feat in 3.5? And from the 3.0 Sword and Fist Errata concerning Knockdown:

Why isn't base attack a skill?

    A. Because skills are heavily tied into intelligence in DnD, and they didn't want intelligence to be the prime stat for every class. B. Attack skill rolls are not part of the 'general skill flow' because of their frequency. Attack roll 'skill checks' would become the most common skill check by...

    Mirror Image vs. Cleave

Aaargh, another Cleave thread, and I missed it :( Anyway, if I am cleaving off mirror images, I might as well get an AoO for each mirror image that draws an AoO when it's caster draws an AoO. Then just watch my mighty cleaving goodness.... ;)

    Afflicted Lycanthropes and Involuntary Change

To what forms does the involuntary change that afflicted lycanthropes must undergo when do lose a quarter of their hit points apply? 1. All the forms? 2. Only the original and hybrid form? 3. Only the original form. Most of the text seems to be written from the perspective of the lycanthrope...

What is a free action times ten?

I would let the take 10 would count as a free action (especially since taking 10 does not take 10 times as long as you claim), I wouldn't let him take 20 as a free action, since it symbolizes 20 tries, and that's a bit too much free actions for me in 1 round.

    Chill Touch

You must always interpret, there is just no way around it. You can go looking up exact definitions of each term used, and look up their definitions until you end up where you start. The RAW never says you can stand on one foot, does that mean you can't? The RAW never says you cannot do 20d6...

Bah, Everybody realizes how Chill Touch is supposed to work, it's just that the text is unclear and does not unequivocally support it. They should have written it like they did with produce flame....

    Mystic theurge vs pure wizard/cleric

Do you guys ever play from 1st to 20th, or is this all idle chatter? I often see classes being judged about how powerful they are at 20th lvl, 18th lvl or something. That's only 5% of you entire career if you reach that high a level at all. With campaign coming to an end, character deaths etc. I...

    Leaders

Our party leader is always based on the player. If I don't DM my characters are party leaders 99% of the time, regardless of Charisma, class etc. Tried not to be a leader many times, but that's usually frustrating for everybody involved. Lots of questioning looks in my direction while other's...

    Readied Actions

Every adventurer is always readying when moving through a hostile dungeon. That's the default assumption. Many monsters in the dungeon are also constantly readying. What happens when both groups meet? Exactly, you roll initiative! What happens when one group is readying while the other's...

    PC vs. PC XP

I'll say! I don't know, but your druid has had a particulary brutal childhood if the first thing she thinks of when she disagrees with something is threaten with deadly force, and go throug with it while the other side is still arguing. And also pretty naive in thinking that a few cure spells...

    Double weapon buffing

A double weapon is one weapon. When considering Crafting, a double weapon is treated as two weapons. When using two weapons style fighting with a double weapon, it is treated as two weapons, with the off hand considered a light weapon. Does MW and GMW treat double weapons as two weapons? We...
