Comments, please - alternate wizard specialization system (Hârn)

Oops. :o :D Actually, more seriously, my main concern in all of this is point #2 - the penalties for learning/casting spells the farther you go down the Wheel. The, er, magical wheel. Not the stupid one. :p In normal D&D, specialists have to choose one or more schools that...

Comments, please - alternate wizard specialization system (Hârn)

Pretty standard D&D-style polytheism. Ten gods (I've added an eleventh - "promoting" a canon demigod) with a variety of portfolios. I'm leaving Clerical magic pretty much as is, except that instead of being able to convert a spell to a healing or inflict harm spell, you convert to a Domain...

Comments, please - alternate wizard specialization system (Hârn)

Comments, please - alternate wizard specialization system (Hârn) I'm working on a conversion of D&D to the HârnWorld setting. (There is a fan-made D20 guide out there but I'm looking explicitly at D&D 3.5, with as few revisions as possible.) While I'm trying to keep as close to the...

    Is D&D/D20 Childish and Immature?

For the record, HarnMaster - and again, HarnWorld=game world, HarnMaster=separate game system - is not RoleMaster. The number of charts are minimal, at least in HarnMaster Core (which I play). And I also contend that HM is actually LESS complex in gameplay than is 3E, or at least that has been...

    Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

Hell, the entire RPG industry has been feeding of D&D's success, at least in North America. Even back in 1st Ed days, most players started with D&D; it was the "gateway game", and it still is. "Advertising" might be a bit harsh, BTW; perhaps "evangelizing" would me more appropriate? :D E.

    Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

Well, mainly because consistency aids in the suspension of disbelief, I think. A world that "makes sense" is easier to treat as real from your character's perspective, IME. By "makes sense", I don't mean it's just like Real Life (TM)...after all, dragons, magic, and other fantastic elements...

    Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

I personally think D&D CAN do "gritty" but it does take extensive tweaking, particularly the magic rules and hit points. The "massive damage" threshold is a step in that direction as far as hit points go, but for some reason that mechanic has always felt sort of arbitrary and artificial...but...

    Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

Because at +5, at DC 15, you can Take 10 - and thereby succeed automatically, hence, 100% success. At +4, you can't "Take 10". You need to roll 11 or higher to succeed (unless you Take 20, of course, but let's not complicate matters!)...hence, 50% success rate. E.

    Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

Heh, thanks, folks...I'll be here all week. :D In retrospect, though, I s'pose it should really have been "HarnMaster is the REAL ULTIMATE GAME SYSTEM"...since we're talking about rules, and as has been noted before: Harn = a fantasy game world suitable for use with any game system...

    Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

Hi, this post is about Harn, the REAL ULTIMATE GAME WORLD. This POST is awesome. My name is Erstwhile and I can't stop thinking about Harn. Harn is cool; and by cool, I mean totally sweet. Facts: 1. Harn is an island populated by mammals, and Gargun, and Ivashu. 2. Characters on Harn...
