Getting a group together in Lubbock, TX

We were on hiatus for a while after having a kid but will be looking for to start again soon. Hours a little more constrained, but would be Monday evenings. We also like to meet people in person first.

Getting a group together in Lubbock, TX

My wife and I are looking to host a weekly game night, and are looking for some folks to join us. We are both mid-30's professionals who want a regular chance to play board games and RPG's. Who: 2-4 mature gamers. Newbies welcome. We both work at Texas Tech University, and would not be...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Another New Ranger Variant

So they dusted off the Shaman and slapped a Ranger label on it? Why can't we just have another non-magic option? We only have a few classes in the entire game that don't use magic.

D&D 5E 5e niggles:- Multiclassing Spellcasters; Dragonborn Sorcerers; Tavern Brawler; Warlocks

You make some good points that I'll have to chew on more. Re: Tavern Brawler: Upping the damage die basically makes it a must-have feat for monks. I would counsel against this. The problem seems to arise from the fact that level 1 monks are underwhelming. This is one of my niggles with the...

D&D 5E The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

People that dislike spell casting rangers can say "multi class druid!" People that like them can say "play a fighter or rogue!" Either is reasonable as a default option, but I still dislike spell casting rangers because I don't like it when non-magical abilities that a skilled character might...

With 5e here, what will 4e be remembered for?

4th edition can virtually guarantee an epic boss monster fight.

D&D 5E forget classes, i want more backgrounds

I'm excited to see setting-specific backgrounds. I hope we get loads of them for each campaign setting.

D&D 5E My New Players Have Quit 5th Edition

There's nothing special about first level. First level just denotes a certain level of competence. If you don't want to run campaigns for characters at that level of competence, don't run at first level.

D&D 5E Three cheers for Mearls and Co.!

I'm extremely excited to play some 5th ed., but what most impresses me is the way they've conducted the process leading up to it. It was not just a transparent but a genuinely sincere attempt to involve the fans in the creation of the game and to get it right.

    D&D 5E Just a reality check.

Most of the complaints, IME, have been nitpicking. For example, I'm a bit worried about fighting styles and don't like multiple attacks; these are minor concerns easily fixed with house rules. Overall, the general atmosphere seems to be one of excitement.

    Developing class-based XP awards

If you're giving out class-specific XP, you might also consider giving out XP for acting according to character ideals from backgrounds.

D&D 5E Changes from the playtest: Combat

Action surge isn't overpowered. But 8 attacks with a 2d6 great sword rerolling 1's and 2's will be incredibly annoying. Here's hoping they have a deadly strike option in the DMG for those of us that dislike multi-attacks.

D&D 5E The D&D Next books I'd like to see after the Core

Complete Book of Elves REVISITED. If I don't get a completely ludicrous and unbalanced set of options for Elves in the first 6 months I'm out. Forever. (Just kidding. And full disclosure: my 7th grade self loved that book.)

D&D 5E Ability Score Requeriments for Multiclassing, yay or nay?

I just don't see those as problems. If its legitimately part of the character's early concept then the level in the second class should happen early. Ideally, they would introduce rules for starting off multiclassed to support such characters. I'm perfectly willing to accept story limitations...

D&D 5E Ability Score Requeriments for Multiclassing, yay or nay?

I like the requirements. In addition, I want taking the first level of a new class to come with hefty opportunity cost in the downtime system. This will, on the margin, encourage multiclassing for story rather than optimization reasons.

D&D 5E LL- Subclasses and Complexity

I'm praying to Crom for ranger subclasses without spells. It's a legitimate concern that "class" is just an empty shell, but that depends on implementation. And I'm happy to have customization options be more lumpy rather than feat-sized, because it radically reduces search costs for things to...

D&D 5E 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Dislike: Lack of generic wizard Multiple attacks return - I liked Deadly Strike! Barbarians get opp attacks while raging- that was the main balancing factor for advantage Still dislike: spellcasting rangers (the feats for spellcasting are there for those that want it, why is this bundled with...

    D&D 5E 18/7/2013 D&D Next Q&A: Feat Progression, Bonus Feats & Requirements

I for one will not miss fiddly feats. If I have to make choices over small abilities, I want them to be over a limited list of options. Otherwise, the cost of finding the right option (whether for fiction or gamist reasons) rapidly exceeds the benefits.
