    Terrible sequels

Not mentioned so far: Conan the Barbarian (great), Conan the Destroyer (dreck) Beverly Hills Cop 1 (great), BHC 2 (pretty good), BHC 3 (dreck)

Name some of your best Party Origin methods

Here's one I got from these very boards over 15 years ago: The party is sitting at an inn, celebrating their latest adventure success. The door opens and they turn to see who it is...and everything goes black. Next thing they know, it is cold and something wet is on their skin. What has...

D&D General Having your players roll their stats

I've given up worrying about stats, as I can always adjust the opposition. So in my last campaign (Dragon of Icespire Peak), I told my players to come up with their character concept or hook, then just pick their stats to match (max 18, no racial adjustments, no bonus feat for alt human)...

What are you reading in 2023?

Just finished S.A. Chakraborty's Daevadbad trilogy. Djinn society in the late 18th Century in the Middle East. Lots of myth, magic and political intrigue. Overall reminded me a lot of Frank Herbert's Dune. My only complaint is that the books are too long. Almost 2,000 pages for the three books...

D&D General Mimics should be a viable PC option

Slightly off-topic: When I ran Dragon of Icespire Peak, the party encountered a mimic that was feasting on some locals. Instead of kiling it, they convinced the mimic to come with them. They promised it food so long as it didn't eat anyone and it agreed. At first, they kept it in their room in...

D&D General TSR to WoTC shift--OR--the de-prioritization on Exploration spells/classes

Kind of an aside, but most of us have seen, in one thread or another, complaints about how spellcasters constantly step on skill classes' toes. They can find traps, cross ravines, sweet-talk NPCs, locate the treasure, etc. with a simple spell. But in reading this thread, I realize those folks...

    Deadly combat systems

The 1983 Star Trek RPG was bonkers with energy weapons. A club would do 2d10 damage. A phaser 1 would do a flat 75. A sample character in the rulebook had 58 hit points total. Even if everyone was using stun settings, combat wouldn't last long. And if they weren't using stun settings? Oh well...

    D&D 5E NeMoren's Vault: Back After 20 Years!

I played the original. Basic dungeon crawl with good mix of fights and puzzles. Had a nice 1E feel, but with more story. The puzzles weren't too difficult, though we failed to solve at least one of them. Plenty of backstory and family history discovered during the adventure. If memory serves, it...

OD&D The one man army is awesome.

"The ratio of figures to men assumed is 1:20 " Ah, I see what you're saying. My understanding from various articles Gygax wrote decades ago is that a Hero is equal to four men, not forty. How that worked on the table using the Chainmail rules... you're guess is as good as mine. (Such...

OD&D The one man army is awesome.

Personally, I always preferred the rules in Swords and Spells. Unit size was 1:10 and damage was easily calculated, based on the number for individuals in a unit. If the unit was full strength, it did base damage x 10. If it was half strength, damage x 5. If a fighter had levels, it did damage x...

OD&D The one man army is awesome.

Per the copy of Chainmail that I have, a Hero is equal to four figures, not four units. Superheroes are just like Heroes, except they are twice as strong (8 figures). Here's the relevant quote: HEROES (and Anti-heroes): Included in this class are certain well-known knights, leaders of army...

D&D 5E How do you rule switching weapons?

After the umpteenth time a player asked if they could draw their bow and shoot, this is pretty much what I did. I told them to ignore the interaction limits, but whatever weapon(s) they use is what they have until their next turn. It simplifies play and hasn't been OP. I still keep the action to...

D&D 5E Horn of Valhalla Berserkers

Makes me think you might be playing Out of the Abyss, as this happened to us. A character summoned in the berserkers, the opponent (no spoilers) was able to dominate a bunch of them, the fight suddenly became much, much harder. We won the battle, but it was a near-run thing. Very memorable.

D&D 5E Would you define the current edition of D&D rules-light or rules-heavy?

This is why I consider 5E to be more rules-light than rules-heavy. There are a lot of rules in the PHB that my group simply doesn't use, or we streamlined them to fit our needs. We couldn't do that with 3E, where everything was integrated. And if one looks at the three core books, most of the...

D&D 5E Need help creating a cursed item for my campaign

Whenever the thumb (or other parts) are used, it inflicts harm on a random innocent somewhere. Mage hand might only cause someone to pull a muscle or lose some money they need. Earthen grasp could break a bone or inflict a minor non-fatal disease. More powerful powers inflict greater harm. At...

    D&D 5E End-game gimmicks: the problem with 5e meta-plots

I don't see a lot of gimmicks, nor the need to buff the characters, but that's because I'm not convinced most CR 18-20 creatures are actually that tough. My game group took out Ogremoch when they were level 11. Granted, there were 4 PCs, plus 4 somewhat lower-level NPCs. But Ogremoch also had 2...

D&D 5E What can an elf do during a trance?

TRANCE Elves don't need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The common word for such meditation is "trance.") While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of...

D&D 5E Suggest different wild surge results

    1. Choose one creature within 60' of you. You immediately change places with that creature. Ignore if there are no creature within 60' of you. 2. For one minute, a small raincloud appears over your head, drenching you in a pouring rain. You have disadvantage on all perception checks while the...
