How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

3e and 4e build magical items, part and parcel of the D&D experience, into the game's basic framework. One better than the other, and hey that's what progress is all about. I'll continue DMing fun quality games, thanks. I'll leave you to your hyperbole. Good for you? Like I've said...

How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

Funny how in every conversation about balance, someone among the fans of less-balanced games always starts ranting about perfect balance, without anyone else bringing up the concept. I don't need perfect balance, just quality balance and some guidance if I want to deviate from what my game...

How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

A DM is the last line of defence against imbalance; the first line is quality standards and DM-guidance. So this thread looks to me like a mass-rationalization for poor quality standards. I mean before 4e we didn't have any better D&D option for a well-balanced and upfront ruleset with good...

How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

What a strange thing to say. Making the party better is the effect of magical items, and their purpose is to reward adventure IMO. Huh, so you're disagreeing with others here, at least with regards to the big baddies -- PCs need magical items to survive those dangerous foes.

How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

That's very strange indeed. This is something that the DMG spells out explicitly? Without any guidance, it's an ignorant risk and thus a false flexibility of the game. I mean okay, compensating for +x boosters is simple enough, if tedious -- just add x to monster attacks and defenses. But...

How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

Without guidance on how not to break it, this is the worst sales pitch I've heard in quite a while. Like okay, flexibility is good but if things are getting thrown out of what just with feats, multiclassing, and flaming swords, I'd expect some guidance on getting things back in whack. Especially...

How come BBEG coming out never have magic weapons or items?

Wow, 5e is a radical departure from D&D tradition. And it has fragile balance, indeed! Is there any kind of guidance on how to rebalance the game when using optional stuff?

    Basic Four

Well yeah, reintroducing any kind of bennie that demis get while leaving humans out in the cold will naturally make demis much more attractive, thus necessitating some sort of demi handicap or human bennie. That's why every edition of WotC D&D has given humans some level 1 bennies. Can't say...

Sell Me On WotBS / Zeitgeist

Sweet, I am so jealous! Thanks, you're the second person to warn me about the wonky reputation system. I'll be taking a look at the numbers to see if there's an easy tweak to make. If not, well, maybe I'll use the system as a guideline for who and what the PCs can bring to bear rather than a...

Sell Me On WotBS / Zeitgeist

Currently I have no stable group. I moved across the country two years ago and I have quite a few gamer friends, and I'm hoping to get a stable FtF monthly game together. And/or a VTT game, depending on free time and how my FtF situation shakes out. Anyhow, based on what you and others have said...

Sell Me On WotBS / Zeitgeist

Looking to buy a 1-30 4e AP, and I've heard good things about both. Authors are welcome to toot their own horns, if you care to comment. :) Alternatively, folks are welcome to sell me on any other 1-30 AP for 4e.

Pathfinder 1E Merging Pathfinder & Older Edition Forums

I was always somewhat confuzzled that PF has its own forum here to begin with. Since the edition-tag filtering function was added, we can already filter out whatever editions/clones we don't want to see. And presumably anyone who wants a forum dedicated to PF and only PF has a Paizo forum...

    D&D 5E Pedantic pet peeves

As a linguistic anarachist, and a critic of English's inconsistencies, it warms the cockles of my heart to see people changing the English language before my very eyes. :D EDIT: Reading beyond the first page, this goes for a whole lot of things mentioned on this thread!

    D&D 4E Sweet spot of 4e

If I had to pick a sweet spot as a player or DM, it'd be either 10th, 20th, or 30th level -- because PCs get all the 'toys' of their current tier. If I had to pick a level to game in for twice-annual game days with some old pals, it'd be 10th -- because they'd get all the heroic 'toys,' without...

    Permanent Increases in Intelligence Question

Ah yes, it can be strategic to put just 1 rank in this skill, and only enough ranks in that one to get a +x bonus. I just like to KIS. :) I'd stipulate that you get your level* in skill points before doing the usual level-up skill point calculation. Otherwise you might wind up with a N/PC with...

    Permanent Increases in Intelligence Question

I'd drop all the bits you wrote to respond to the "But how can PCs learn skills out of nowhere?!" complaints. Same here. Under these rules, what I'd do is simply put 1 rank into a new skill the level before I planned to boost my Int into the next modifier. Then when I achieved the next...

    Permanent Increases in Intelligence Question

Funny, I know an edition that's very well-balanced and very 'realistic' as well. Or internally consistent, or whatever term you want to use. But by all means, you know your tastes best, both in games and in flame wars. ;) I'm not sure why Greenfield won't let this go, but you're totally...

    Permanent Increases in Intelligence Question

Can't believe a thread about Int bonuses is still going after 5 pages. I suppose it has a ways to go before it gets the length of the resting thread, though. If you're concerned about 'realism' and balance, you're already playing the wrong game and the wrong edition, respectively.

D&D 5E Do You DM or Play with Flair?

Can't say I'm familiar with Pendragon, how does it do alignment?

D&D 5E Do You DM or Play with Flair?

Saeviomagy Arilyn The D&D priest (aka cleric) is actually odd compared to most real world priests of polytheistic faiths. My cleric hews more closely to real world priests, in that each one is a servant of all his culture's gods and is not supposed to play favorites.
