I thought the final 4 or 5 levels in the PHB were supposed to cover Epic play. If we're talking about adding something to the end of the progression, I like the idea that "epic" play means hitting the end of the level progression and instrad advancing in other ways.

I'm guessing you googled clever rather than consulting an american dictionary... Clever, when it is similar to intelligent, refers to quick wit. I wouldn't comfortably refer to anyone lacking a quick wit as unintelligent.
