D&D 5E Sorcerous Origin Bonus Spells

In my world, sorcerers of different origins have completely different spell lists.

D&D 5E No Spell-less Ranger in the Near Future

Even easier: Step 1: Make a Fighter. Step 2: That's it.

D&D 5E House Rule for Subdual, is it fair?

How about this: Nonlethal attacks have disadvantage. If the attack result exceeds the target's AC by 5 or more, it becomes a lethal attack. Oops.

D&D 5E What does immunity look like?

I'll usually say "The monster resists/is immune to that attack. Half/no damage." I might give a visual description, but I won't mince words with game mechanics.

D&D 5E Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

This is the correct answer to the question posed by the thread title, and I'm surprised it hasn't gotten any XP (here, have some on me). To put it another way: Quality assurance has diminishing returns. The closer you get to 100% perfection, the more difficult/expensive it is. There's not much...

    D&D 5E Building a better Rogue

House rules from my game: The 1d4 dagger is now known as "knife." "Daggers," "short swords," and "rapiers" all use the 1d6 short sword stats. The 1d8 finesse sword is a special NPC Elf thing.

    D&D 5E Building a better Rogue

I like the Rogue a lot. It encourages creativity from the player in order to take advantage of its unique abilities, which perfectly matches the identity of the class itself. What could be better: Some of the subclass stuff is a little weird, especially on the Assassin side. Do you need...

D&D 5E Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

I know this is all a matter of opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but IN MY OPINION, Curse of Strahd was so bad that it made me want to never buy a WotC adventure ever again. But I know most people around here don't share my opinions on such things. And when I say "bad," I...

D&D 5E Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

Let's be honest, though. The reason WotC adventures aren't great is simple: their goal isn't to make great adventures, their goal is to make money.

D&D 5E Xanathar's for a specific setting according to Mearls

I think by "Xanathar's for a specific setting," he meant "a mechanical expansion book, like Xanathar's Guide, but for a specific setting." Implying that Xanathar's Guide itself is not for a specific setting.

D&D 5E Why are 5e familiars celestial/fey/fiend instead of beasts?

I think it's to show that they're magical spirits, not normal animals.

No. :) But when I used to run in the Realms, I just used Common because who cares?

D&D 5E Inspiration: Exclusive, Group, or None

I find that Inspiration comes up so rarely that it's not worth using at all. In line with 5e's design philosophy, I'd rather make it much bigger, or eliminate it altogether. These days, I've been using straight-up Fate Points instead. No problems yet.

    D&D 5E Alacrity, a new Ability Score

I know this is a minor point, but why not just call it "Speed"? That's a very clear, well-known, one-syllable word.

    D&D 5E Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

Bilbo Initiative: Declare action(s) and/or movement, then throw dice -Roll 1d20 Starting with the highest roll, resolve All Action and Movements Goto Next Round IMO: If your action can apply to a different target, you may change the target. (i.e., attack a different creature if the one you...

D&D 5E What actions by a PC Don't need to be stated?

Don't be a gotcha DM. If it matters, ask them. "Do you want to hold your breath?" "Are you leaving that rope behind?" "The lock also looks unusual, are you checking that too?" "Are you SURE you want to do that?" One trick I like to do is to narrate the players' actions, with a question...

D&D 5E What does balance mean to you?

Neat thread! Guess I better answer the questions: A: But seriously: I looked up the dictionary definition. Balance is "a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions." This seems about right. In game design (or any art, really), EVERYTHING is a balancing...

D&D 5E Warlock in party with Quasit breaking story

First of all, I'd like to reiterate what a few posters have already said: hidden information is overrated. Also, exposition can often be underrated. Stories are more interesting if the audience knows what's going on. As for what I'd do as the DM in this situation: I'd let the player have his...

D&D 5E Why Are Skeletons Weak To Bludgeoning Weapons?

I mean, I get it. They don't have internal organs, so you can't stab them or slice them up. All you can do is smash their bones. But why, in terms of game mechanics, is this one type monster weak to this one type of weapon? It would make sense if other types of monsters were weak to other...
