Donde esta la biblioteca?

Does it seem odd to anyone else that the first phrase you learn in a foreign language is "where is the library?"...Seriously, if you cant speak the language what the heck are you going to accomplish in a giant building full of books written in that language?

Oh, well done.

First phrase I learned was "¿Donde está el baño?" Much more likely to get used, IMO.

Felicitaciones, ForceUser.

I think what he's trying to say is that he's finally finished with three semesters worth of Spanish, and has passed his final exam, so now is saying hi to the general populace of Latin America.

I think.

As someone who lives in the midwest, let me say he's sayin' 'Howdy!' to a lot more than just Latin America.

I know just enough Spanish that I can get by. More & more it's easier to speak to people in Spanish than try to go through the "Did you understand what I just said?" game.

I'm not just talking Wal-Mart/Mexican Restaurants (insert sterotype here) either. I'm dealing with more and more 'Spanish as a second language' people in wherever I go, in all levels of society.

(I'm not complaining; the friend I work for as part time IT tech is from Peru, and was working on his Master's in Anthropology till he found out how much more he could make as an IT tech).

I wish I had taken 6 years of Spanish instead of French. Spanish I could use on a daily basis. French? I can look impressive at fancy restaurants.

Don't you mean English as a second language? French and Spanish have many of the same words. You might be able to fake it.

Congrats Forceuser. Just don't forget what you worked so hard to learn like so many of us.

Yeah,

I meant English.

Actually, I meant American. As my freinds from Britain remind me: "You Heathens have no idea about the correct pronunciation of the Queen's English!"

To which I usually respond with something along the lines of "Oh Yeah, that Canadian English, I hear that on BBC America all the time. Do you think they shoot those shows up in Vancouver, B.C? Eh?" They then turn a shade of Purple/Red I dub "English Infuriation"

I know enough French to understand written Spanish/Italian, but I was never good at verbal understanding. As being trapped in the Midwest, I READ my French books very well, but never got enough time listening to French speakers.
