D&D 5E 1 level dip into cleric as tortle monk

I'm starting a ToA campaign with some friends and made a tortle strength based Monk. I'm looking into going into Drunken Master at higher level. I'm thinking about doing a one level dip into cleric for Shield of Faith to get AC up to 19. It seems like having a higher AC for redirect attack. Also a few spells can add a lot of gameplay variation. What do you guys think? Am I giving up too much?

Very few classes can't take a 1 level multiclass dip. Actually your usually fine with 2 unless you have an awesome level 20 endcap ability... Monks don't so you should have no problem. Also, your not strictly losing anything until you reach level 20 when you unable to gain levels and still don't have your capstone ability, but since you will have been using the cleric level the entire time, many campaigns don't make it past level 15 anyway, and many of the campaigns that do make it past 12-15 to level 20, stop at level 20. The only way you will actually regret this choice is if your group does enough post 20 content to off set the amount of time you played up to level 20, which would be fairly uncommon but it happens. On top of the best class abilities are at level 18 not level 20.

So if you think it would be fun, I would say don't stress any 1 level dip unless your actually starting a campaign at level 15-20 with intent to continue beyond 20.
Every level you dip after the first is a important consideration and if your a full caster taking more than 3 is painful but Monk is not a full caster.

It is fine. If you're trying to be optimal and you plan to play to level 5 and beyond, it is rarely optimal to multiclass before 5th level as there is a huge power bump there and the advancement tends to slow down at 5th level. However, it isn't a crime to delay it one more level to add the cleric level to the equation - you'll be fine.

Personally, if I were trying to add AC to the PC, I'd be looking for a 13 Charisma and a class that can add the shield spell. Hexblade Warlock could be fun with the shortsword for a weapon. Hex or Shield, a few cantrips... nice little benefits.
