17th level Gestalt Barbarian/????

Soulknife would also be pretty good. Barbarian BAB+HP makes up for their weaknesses. With the cash you'd save on a good magic weapon, you could buy plenty of other toys.

Fighter is always something to fall back on for the feats.

Dragon Shaman would also be decent. You'd pick up natural armor, buffing abilities, and a breath weapon.

The synergy in a Barbarian/Sorcerer can be amazing. Haste, the stat buffs, blink etc. All make the barbarian even more effective in combat.
And for the truly nasty: Wraihtstrike with the full BAB,power attack and strength of a barbarian is just not right (add in leap attack an the DM may ban it then and there) [edit: forget leap attack a full attack (all 4 of them) at this level is nasty enough]. Wraithstrike is borderline in a regular game - with gestalt it's just too nasty.

I'm strongly considering making it a Minotaur (ECL 8 from LA +2 and 6HD)./ The DM is allowing us to split ECL costs evenly from the start of the progression, so 4 levels on each gestalt side would go towards Minotaur, ...

Hmm... that seems pretty broken, great physical stats and 6 HD (+ LA) for only 4 levels (even in Gestalt it's still just 4 levels), but if your DM allows it so. It's only a one-shot after all. ;)

How about this:

Minotaur|Minotaur
Minotaur|Minotaur
Minotaur|Minotaur
Minotaur|Minotaur
Barbarian|Favored Soul
Fighter|Favored Soul
Fighter|Favored Soul
Fighter|Favored Soul
Fighter|Favored Soul
Frenzied Berserker|Favored Soul
Frenzied Berserker|Favored Soul
Frenzied Berserker|Favored Soul

Power Attack (1st), Cleave (3rd), Destructive Rage (6th), Intimidating Rage (9th), ... Practiced Spellcaster, Extend Spell, ...

Belt of Magnificence +4 (100,000 gp, +4 enhancement to all abilities)

Some more good ideas here. I've looked over Psionics and it's just too unfamiliar to put together a character I'd have fun playing in a one-shot - I'd be spending too much time double-checking stuff.

So, that out, I'm looking back over the other and the new suggestions. I've never really posted much here, but I've lurked enough to know that Thanee knows a thing or two - so I'll take a close look at that build. Favoured Soul I know - great saves.

Where is Dragon Shaman from?

Spellthief I'm not intimate with, but it just doesn't sound/feel right. Same with Sorcerer. I'll take a glance at the Ninja.

As for the allowing of the ECL like this, I started it. :) It's a four-person group that meets about 4 times a year, taking turns DM'ing. I ran the last one and allowed the odd ECL gestalt variations, to great success - they all enjoyed making those characters even more (a Lich, a Mindflayer and a Half-Fiend - it was an Evil vs. Nature story), and it didn't break anything because I was tossing stuff at them way beyond the appropriate CR anyways. ;)

Then you know who to blame. :p

Anyways... you need to figure out (unless you have done so already), in what way you gain feats and such from the stacked racial HD. This character will have 6 HD by 4th level, does that mean he already has his 3rd feat then? If so, the feat selection up there wouldn't work, since you need the level of barbarian for the rage feats and then you would have to wait until you get the 9th and 12th level feat to pick up both.

For gestalt, rogue is great. You can combine your raw force with sneak attack, it boots your reflex save, gives you a butt ton more skill points, gives you evasion if you get some mithral medium armor, and some cool high level rogue abilities. I would recommend slippery mind, that will help your lowest save (will), so you'll be good to go all around.

I second this advice.

Keep in mind that the major advantages of being a Rogue (Sneak Attack dice, skill points, and UMD as a class skill) do not require you to be a sneaking skulking character. Or even have a noteworthy Dex. Skill points are useful for a hell of a lot of things. In a party with an iota of teamwork, a PC willing to eat the pain and wade into the thick of it should not have trouble getting his buddies' help setting up Flank Attacks. I would also note that 15-20 ranks of UMD is none too shabby regardless of how unimpressive your Cha score happens to be.

Ridley,

True and also the same is true with Ninja. You don't have to be "sneaky" but with enough skill you can certainly be cool.
