I was fortunate as a teenager; my best friend's dad had an extraordinary collection of 40s-70s sci-fi and fantasy, and he was very generous in letting a snot-nosed kid have the run of the place.

Our lists look very similar, with the exceptions of Vance and Anderson. I always had the hardest time with either Kothar or Kyrik...can't remember, whichever one has "Red Lori" in it. Having known a few Loris in my time...too distracting. Plus the worlds were never as interesting as I would have liked.

I've read:

Derleth, August.
Howard, R. E. "Conan" Series
Leiber, Fritz. "Fafhrd & Gray Mouser" Series; et al.
Lovecraft, H. P.
Moorcock, Michael. STORMBRINGER; STEALER OF SOULS; "Hawkmoon" Series (esp. the first three books)
Tolkien, J. R. R. THE HOBBIT; "Ring Trilogy"

Wow...clearly I am not playing the game correctly! :p

Anderson, Poul: I've read THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS and other things that he's written.
Bellairs, John: THE FACE IN THE FROST is the only one of his books that I 've read.
Brackett, Leigh: I've read some of her books.
Brown, Fredric: I've read most of his short stories.
Carter, Lin: I've read 1 book of the "World's End" Series and numerous other things by Carter.
de Camp, L. Sprague: I read FALLIBLE FIEND, and other things by de Camp.
de Camp & Pratt: I read the "Harold Shea" Series.
Derleth, August: I've read a lot of Derleth
Dunsany, Lord: I've THE KING OF ELFLAND'S DAUGHTER and quite a few of his short stories.
Farmer, P. J.: I haven't read "The World of the Tiers" Series, I did read the "Riverworld" books. I ultimately found those to be disappointing.
Fox, Gardner: I've read a few Fox short stories (at least 1 appeared in Dragon). Aside from comics, I haven't read much by Fox.
Howard, R. E.: I've read all of the "Conan" and "Kull" stories, and many other things that Howard wrote, too.
Lanier, Sterling. HIERO'S JOURNEY I've read this and the sequel.
Leiber, Fritz.: I've read only a few of the "Fafhrd & Gray Mouser" Series, and also some of his other stories.
Lovecraft, H. P. I have read all of his fiction.
Merritt, A. : I've read MOON POOL; DWELLERS IN THE MIRAGE, METAL MONSTER, another novel whose title I can't recall, some short stories.
Moorcock, Michael: I've read all of the early "Elric" books and some of the later ones, and most of the rest of the "Eternal Champion" stuff.
Norton, Andre: I've read a lot of Norton.
Offutt, Andrew J.:. I've read several of the SWORDS AGAINST DARKNESS anthologies.
Pratt, Fletcher: I've read the BLUE STAR.
St. Clair, Margaret: I've read SIGN OF THE LABRYS.
Tolkien, J. R. R.: I've read THE HOBBIT, the "Ring Trilogy", and some of his other stuff including THE SILMARILLION.
Vance, Jack: I've read THE EYES OF THE OVERWORLD; THE DYING EARTH; CUGEL'S SAGA, and a lot of his science fiction, too.
Wellman, Manly Wade: I've read all of his "Silver John" stories and novels, and many others by this author also.
Williamson, Jack: I think that I've read one novel by Willamson, about witches in the modern day; maybe titled DARKER THAN YOU THINK?
Zelazny, Roger. I read JACK OF SHADOWS and both "Amber" Series, and much more by Zelazny.

I learned about some of these books and authors from the 1E DMG (e.g. Bellairs, St Clair, THE BLUE STAR) but I was a fan of fantasy and science fiction before I heard of D&D.
