1e inspiration list, how much have you read?

Of that list, only the following:
Lovecraft
Dunsany
Tolkien
Derleth (much to my regret)

I suspect much of it is a generational thing however because some of them I've frankly never heard of, or only know of as older authors from decades back.

Well, the list was made in 1978 or so, and the bulk of the authors are now dead, so they are older authors from decades back.

It's a relatively old list and I've read a lot of those because I wanted to read them, not particularly for D&D. I sought out The Broken Sword because of this list and was certainly not disappointed.

Anderson, Poul. THE HIGH CRUSADE; THE BROKEN SWORD and many others
Brackett, Leigh.
Burroughs, Edgar Rice, "Pellucidar" Series; Mars Series; Venus Series
Carter, Lin, plenty, but not the "World's End" Series.
de Camp, L. Sprague, likewise a lot but not the specific stuff recommended by EGG.
de Camp & Pratt. "Harold Shea" Series
Derleth, August, a little
Dunsany, Lord, some short stories
Farmer, P. J. "The World of the Tiers" Series; et al.
Howard, R. E. "Conan" Series and others
Lanier, Sterling. HIERO'S JOURNEY
Leiber, Fritz. "Fafhrd & Gray Mouser" Series; et al.
Lovecraft, H. P.
Moorcock, Michael. STORMBRINGER; STEALER OF SOULS; "Hawkmoon" Series (esp. the first three books) and others
Norton, Andre.
Tolkien, J. R. R. THE HOBBIT; "Ring Trilogy"
Vance, Jack. THE EYES OF THE OVERWORLD; THE DYING EARTH; et al.
Williamson, Jack? I think so but can't remember specifics
Zelazny, Roger "Amber" Series; et al.

Surprised not to see on this list:

Moore, C. L. JIREL OF JOIRY
Smith, Clark Ashton

Our lists look very similar, with the exceptions of Vance and Anderson. I always had the hardest time with either Kothar or Kyrik...can't remember, whichever one has "Red Lori" in it. Having known a few Loris in my time...too distracting. Plus the worlds were never as interesting as I would have liked.

Please, please pick up some Anderson. THE HIGH CRUSADE has some genuinely funny moments in it (impact fused armed nuclear warheads thrown by trebuchet will pretty much spoof anti-missile defenses on the lookout for hypersonic surface-to-surface rockets, did you know that?), and THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS is just too damn good not to read.

I always found Fox's serial work for THE DRAGON more approachable than anything else he did.

Vance's LYONESSE is actually better than CUGEL THE CLEVER, but THE DYING EARTH (if you can find a copy) is a good anthology.

How many have you read?

Not really that many.

Burroughs, Edgar Rice, "Pellucidar" Series; Mars Series; Venus Series
- all of Mars & Venus series, and first of Pellucidar.

de Camp & Pratt. "Harold Shea" Series; CARNELIAN CUBE
- all (or most) of Harold Shea series

Farmer, P. J. "The World of the Tiers" Series; et al.
- Riverworld, a few other titles.

Howard, R. E. "Conan" Series
- a few stories.

Leiber, Fritz. "Fafhrd & Gray Mouser" Series; et al.
- about half or so

Lovecraft, H. P.
- a couple of stories here and there.

Moorcock, Michael. STORMBRINGER; STEALER OF SOULS; "Hawkmoon" Series (esp. the first three books)
- read all of those; my current campaign draws heavily on the Corum books for inspiration.

Norton, Andre.
- read a few books

Tolkien, J. R. R. THE HOBBIT; "Ring Trilogy"
- yes.

Zelazny, Roger. JACK OF SHADOWS; "Amber" Series; et al
- read most of Zelazny's work; one of my favourite authors.

Cheers!
