1st Level HP's = CON..thoughts on the rule

where did these numbers come from? why does a dwarf get +8 while a elf gets +4?
didnt the racial constitution modifiers already account for race hp variation?
They came from my butt.

IMHO it should take a few levels for a tough Elf to overtake a weak Dwarf. But that's just MHO. :)

Here's what you really want to do: make a hybrid of SWSaga's system and my old race-based system.

At 1st level, each PC shall have:
- Double maximum HP for his class; and
- Bonus HP equal to his Con modifier (but just once); and
- Some extra HP based on his race, as follows:

  • Halfling: +2 hp
  • Elf, Gnome, Xeph: +4 hp
  • Human, Half-Elf, Elan: +6 hp
  • Dwarf, Half-Orc, Manead, Dromite: +8 hp
  • Aasimar, Tiefling, Half-Giant: +10 hp

I like this minus the racial adjustments.

SW Saga's way of doing this is triple max class hp at 1st level; I figured double class + one "race" die would be around the same, but would highlight race as a more important component than it is in Star Wars.

This simple change though actually helped me accomplish my goals: 1) make CON more important; 3) make players judge how much CON they think they want to do..considering that everyone can start out equal; 4) it's simple.

p.s. we have a humanocentric campaign, but i always liked the first level racial variance idea for hp's

I'm curious as why you want to make Con more important? It's already basically the most universally used stat in the game. In my opinion, rules that make Con less important are desireable.

Good question. I dont' think that ability scores should be universally desirable. CON seems to me actually pretty useless. Fort save and a couple measly hit points extra per level. Exactly one skill and no feats (right?). Taking a wizard from 4 hp's to 10 hp's is hardly game breaking..even if he went to 20 hp's..it's still not game breaking.

In a standard D&D game too, con is incredibly redundant. The sheer amount of magical crap overload that appears in standard D&D games pretty much assures this :)

Since we're in a lower magic game, we focus more on abilities, hp's and skills (and some player thought of course). Players count on their innate intelligence to stay alive rather than the outside-in concept of magical items :)

Don't understate the importance of CON. Sure, it's not used as some other things like DEX for example, but when it is used it's often much more important.

Potentially, the three most likely causes of death (-10 HP, Failed Death Saves and Drowning) are all CON based. And, you become helpless if you lose any other stat, but if you lose CON, well, that's it. HP will also determine if you are conscious.

Anyhow, that's besides the point. I also think that Victim overstates the importance of a good CON score.

If you want longevity then using CON is probably a good way to go. Though, as I said above, I'd try to ensure there's no carry-on effect past the first couple of levels.

Nope, no carry-on. Mages go right back to d4 :)

My players are still carrying on about it..except for one ungrateful player. He thinks that since the non-barbarians get extra hit points he should get DOUBLE. What an ungrateful turd. He keeps ragging on me. I'm thinking of kicking him out of the group as he obviously doesn't fit the no-autistic-gamers-allowed policy we have for our group :)
