D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] AoO provoking AoO

Please, I had my share of threads where you try to get even longer strings of AoO's. They won't come up that often, and discussing it or changing the rules accordingly very likely takes more time than that quirk will ever do.

"Easy to come up with" and "actually happens frequently in the game" are two different things, though. I've only occasionally seen the case of even a single return AoO triggered by an AoO, and can't recall for certain that I've ever seen a longer chain than that.

In fact AoOs are mostly a way to prevent you doing certain things close to opponents, unless it's really fundamental for you to do that. I often play, at least at low levels, dumb monsters which provoke many AoO to the PCs because they have very low Int.

Int has nothing to do with combat prowess or instincts. A dire bear has Int 2, and will rip you limb from limb given the chance.

Well, that's just my way to "role play" monsters when I DM, and in fact I have to say that none of the animals in my game use any tactics. They just fight if they are enraged or scared, and retreat when they are seriously hurt; when they retreat they just run off as fast as they can, not caring about provoking AoOs at all, except that they obviously try to move farther from the threat.

He hasn't denied that. He didn't say the monster's won't take their AoO. He said they won't avoid them. So that dire bear might run up to the spiked chain wielder to rip him limb form limb, or right through the threatened area of the fighter to get to the offending archer to rip him limb from limb.
