Zaryz touches down on the floor and looks about. He approaches the corpse to inspect it, wondering if it's some other intruder that ventured down here or instead someone that helped build this strange not-cave.

"This looks to go on quite a ways," he whispers to the others. "I think we should check the upper level more thoroughly before exploring this metal cavern." the heavily-armored dragon kobold advises.

If the others are in agreement, he will levitate them up one at a time, to check the rest of the upper level first.

"Well, it appears we must go back anyways, as this wall blocks our movement." Looking up he asks, "Will you carry me back up Zaryz?"

Daragix spins around wildly, brandishing his shortspear. Since it seems nothing is endangering him, he slowly lowers the tip of his weapon.

"This cave be very strange... But yes, we need to know more. And leave no foes behind us. Just in case."

Assuming nothing else happens, Daragix goes to climb back up, rather than take the awkward ride from Zaryz.

Zaryz lifts Aurix to the top of the shaft, then levitates back down to retrieve Krixle if he hasn't scrambled back up the rungs yet. "You may proceed with scouting." he says at the top. The dragon kobold walks around to the back of the room, looking around and waiting for the others to scout out whatever passageways they would.

Boingy! Boingy!
Before ascending, Zaryz's inspects the skeleton. Among the bones and litter, he finds a strange bracelet. It is a wide band of some sort of porcelain. The interior of the bracelet, however, is spongy. From opposite sides of the bracelet project odd extensions. One is about a foot long, and, upon closer examination, proves to be a tube filled with glass or crystal. The other project extends about half as far. It is thicker, and its end is contoured, almost like the grip of a dagger.

While Zaryz looks at the unusual bracelet, Krixle spots a small rectangle on the floor several feet away from skeleton. Picking it up, he discovers that it is about the size of a playing card, and made of some semi-flexible material that Krixle cannot identify.

The map of the entry is still here.

Krixle will hold up the strange rectangle for all to see, waving it furiously. "Look! Look! I found more magic metal!"l After he has gathered everyone's attention, he'll examine the thing carefully.

After climbing up the rungs, Krixle will run down the path on the left side of the map, ignoring the door in favor of exploring the hallway more fully.

Daragix pulls himself back up the rungs. He has a hard time figuring which way up and down was less comfortable...

As Krixle dashes off, Daragix tries to move quickly and go after him, but quickly decides not to, knowing that the big, dark-scaled dragon kobold could never keep up with the quick little whiptail. So, the spear-wielder sets himself to following slowly. He walks down the hall Krixle ran down, hoping to give the whiptail any help, if he needs it.

Boingy! Boingy!
Ambush! (Surprise Round & Round 1)

Krixle rushes toward the west corridor with Daragix following behind at a more cautious pace. Aurix and Zaryz bring up the rear, still closer to the pit than their other two comrades. Krixle has moved about 10 feet into the hall with Daragix about 25 or so feet behind. In an instant, the air around Krixle and Daragix swirls with obfuscating shadows that not even darkvision can adequately penetrate. Flapping sounds fill the air. Two strange monsters detach themselves from the ceiling, from where they had previously lurked unseen, and swoop toward Krixle and Daragix!

Despite being surprised -- or perhaps because of the reflexive crouch he drops into -- Krixle is untouched by the creature attacking him. It swoops down, its tentacles flaying, but to no avail. Daragix, however, doesn't prove so fortunate. The other beast slams into Daragix's chest, its tentacles attempting to wrap around his neck and head. Daragix is able to raise his shield just enough to prevent that creature from grappling his head.

Before anyone can react, the beasts renew their assault, and a third one drops from hiding, aiming at Krixle. This time, Krixle is overwhelmed. Both monsters slam into him, their tentacles flailing and tearing. One creature engulfs Krixle's head, its tentacles drawing tight. The other wraps itself around his shoulder, chest, and neck. Although the monsters are small, they are terrifically strong. Bones crack!, breath rasps from Krixle's lungs, and then the whiptail scout drops to the floor unconscious! Meanwhile Daragix keeps up his desperate defense against his attacker. Its tentacles raise more welts, draw more blood, but the beast fails to get its deadly grip on Daragix.

[sblock=OOC]
Ouch! Krixle got brutalized! The party was surprised by the creatures. The first set of attacks represent the surprise round. The second set represent the monsters' normal actions in initiative order. Zaryz, Daragix, and Aurix still get to act this round. I've amended the map to show starting positions and the area of darkness (which imposes a 20% miss chance as normal). The two monsters not shown on the map are grappling/constricting Krixle.

Zaryz blinks for a moment at the strange shift in the darkness ahead. "That is not natural...." He approaches where Daragix seemed to be standing a few moments ago, getting closer until he sees the other dragon kobold and the monster assailing Daragix.

Zaryz hisses. "Darkmantles. Do not let them strangle you! They have leathery skin, and the dark cloud is their doing!" he says with a snarl. As he does so, Zaryz focuses his will on the beast before him and Daragix, driving an unseen spear of palpable hatred into the beast's primitive mind. A bass throbbing is heard in the area, almost as loud as Zaryz's words, like distant wardrums or the stamping of hooves.
