"3.5" doesn't make sense...

WotC calls it D&D 3.5, so that's pretty good reason to stick with it, in my opinion.

Why not call it 4E since it nerfs enough previous products that it is not a revision but an Edition.

It's more of a 3.1, IMO, but 3R would work.

Consider this:

Basic D&D went through four revisions (Blue book, red book (Otus), red book (Elmore), Rules Cyclopedia). They never changed the name, or called it a "revision", or Basic D&D 2d edition, or whatever.

And you didn't hear all the wailing and gnashing of teeth that we do now, either.

Heh - nicely done. I first ran into this when I met a guy who got into MIT at age 16. He knows 141 digits of pi... and would do dramatic recitals of it, which ended by mock suicide.
