[3.5] Eldritch Knight & Andy Collins

Hmm. "Good BAB" isn't very specific, but I'd guess it means 3/4 BAB and not full.

Actually, I think that it is very specific. The typical nomenclature is that the Fighter's BAB progression is "Good", the Cleric's is "Average" and the Wizard's is "Poor". He might be speaking in the vernacular, though.

Cheers

And being a wiz, your int will be much higher, giving you those skill points so sadly lacking in a true fighter. Plus, you now have something in line with a cleric- a spell shooting, weapon wielding killing machine. Kind of brings to miind Spellsword, but much more powerful.

I was just considering the following class:

Pre-Req: all martial weapons, 3rd level arcane spells.
HD: d8
Skill Points/Level: 2
BAB: As Fighter
Good Saves: Fort & Ref.

1st: cast spells in light or medium armour (no failure chance)
2nd: +1 caster level
3rd: +1 caster level
...
10th: +1 caster level

Would that be too strong?

It lacks the HD and Feats of the fighter
It lacks 2 levels of wizard, and the bonus feats.

At high levels, the fighter component drops away. (Max BAB of +15, if Wiz9/Ftr1/PrC10; 18th level caster).

Cheers!

It'd be an obscenity.

It loses one (count it, one) hit point per level compared to a fighter, 5 feats (something which fighters generally don't know what to do with after a certain point anyway) and gets a second good save, the ability to cast in armor, and 8 levels of spell progression?

Compared to a wizard, it loses 2 caster levels and 3 metamagic feats, and gains a good BAB, 2 HP per level, and a massive AC boost.

My initial impression is that it probably would be too strong.

I wish D&D used the d20 Modern/SW "average" save category; it would be useful in many cases, where good saves are too good, but poor saves are too poor. E.g., this class -- with average saves in Fort & maybe Will (why Ref, BTW?), it might not be too bad.

I'd also definitely break up the no spell failure chance in light & medium armor; at the least, put medium armor at a later level. I'd be more in favor of perhaps gradually reducing the penalties -- e.g., "Cast in armor: At 1st level, reduce arcane spell failure chance by 5% when wearing light armor; this increases to 10% at 2nd level, and ASF for light armor is removed entirely at 3rd level; at 4th level, spell failure while wearing medium armor is reduced by x%..."

I'll wait and see but 9 levels of spellcasting seems a bit much. The 5 of the spellsword as a bit weak. i'd of gone with 7ish. Without seeing the fighting component its hard to judge.
