[3.5] Eldritch Knight & Andy Collins

Andy mentioned that it's the equivalent of the Mystic Theurge for Fighter/Wizard types. From that it could be inferred that the class gets a good attack bonus progression, spellcasting on 9 levels, and nothing else.

Hopefully, the armor casting mechanic is scaled sufficiently to discourage dipping into one level of the class for it ... so you don't have a Wiz18/Ftr1/EK1 (or similar) with virtually the whole wizard spell list and the ability to cast in armor.

I'm afraid with only 1 level of Ftr required and 9/10 spellcasting levels the temptation to do that will just be too great. OTOH, if the mechanic is a gradual reduction in ASF, or something like that, it'll probably be OK.

Actually, I'd think it would be pretty bad as a class to take one level of. The first level is the one (presumably) with no spellcasting level boost....if you take that one level, you may as well take the next 9 and have a vastly improved BAB, rather than continue as wizard and gain 1 or 2 bonus feats and a little better familiar progression.

However, compare with Still Spell, effectively the spellcasting ability of a wizard 2 levels lower.

:)

I was just considering the following class:

Pre-Req: all martial weapons, 3rd level arcane spells.
HD: d8
Skill Points/Level: 2
BAB: As Fighter
Good Saves: Fort & Ref.

1st: cast spells in light or medium armour (no failure chance)
2nd: +1 caster level
3rd: +1 caster level
...
10th: +1 caster level

Would that be too strong?

It lacks the HD and Feats of the fighter
It lacks 2 levels of wizard, and the bonus feats.

At high levels, the fighter component drops away. (Max BAB of +15, if Wiz9/Ftr1/PrC10; 18th level caster).

Cheers!

No way he'll hve no chance of spell failure in light or medium armor. That makes it very frontloaded.
