D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 is Anime! Wait, what?

So, out of 21 stories, Conan wears armour in nine of them.

Fine, fine, but that's missing the point.

It looks awesome when he doesn't.

As long as my RPG art hews to the "Does It Look Awesome?" standard, I can let it pass.

Which is, odly, why the PHB cover doesn't work for me. Totally not awesome. Looks like "Sudden Constipation On Awkward Rock: A Love Story.".....and I'm usually a fan of WAR (that barbarian lady = badass).

As far as I'm concerned, he's the face of D&D. And that's a good thing.

That may be, but if so, it explains why 99%+ of D&D art since 3E totally fails to inspire me. The exceptions I'm aware of seem to be concentrated in the Malhovic Press Arcana Evolved line (and only about 1/3 of them inspire me at all.) That said ...

What they really need to do is to completely bypass "anime" and "typical fantasy" and go for a wide variety of art styles.

Bring on the 4E Cave Paintings and 4E Cubism.

Okay, maybe not Cubism, but I really wish they would embrace the VARIETY, and not just stick to pleasing specific existing fan groups.

My favorite artist is Monet. I would really love to see some Impressionistic fantasy art. Does anyone do Impressionism anymore? Heh, I've been unsure how I would handle the art if I ever put out a product. Maybe I should start looking now for good Impressionist artists. :D

now are we talking oil and brush, or tablet and painter?

theirs alot of impressionist artists who use digital, but they are most likely expensive. Much more then most rpg businesses are willing to spend.

Hopefully I am wrong.

So what if someone drew Conan anime style?

Who's the artist on the bear pic btw, style looks familiar but a name isn't jumping to mind.

Nope, just pointing out that claiming Conan, THE GRANDDADDY OF ALL BARBARIANS, didn't wear armour regularely is wrong in every way. Armour is cool, and Conan looks cool too in armour. The next guy looking uber-cool in armour and who is closest to a raging barbarian/berserker is Guts from Berserk. And he always wears wicked sweet black armour, currently now a cursed black harness that will keep you fighting by impaling your broken bones and stabilizing them. :D He's totally Anime/Manga/Conan/Eye-Beam-of-Salvation.

Bring on the superfantastic armours that barbarian warriors wear all the time.

That man-thing with boob-like appendages and elephant feet is a level 1-mook that gets cleaved unobtrusively by real Barbarian Player Characters. ;)
