[3.5] Quarterstaff (Andy Collins tidbit)

But the real question is, how will this affect the popular board pastime of beating Hong with a stick?

No quarter shall be asked and none shall be given.

In my experience the quartestaff is underused in 3E. I've always liked it.

I always thought it odd that the Monk and the Ranger didn't have a "knack" for staves in 3E--so I house ruled that these two classes, for their own respective reasons, automatically waived the -4 off-hand penalty if ever they used a quarterstaff...

It'll be nice for the quarterstaff in 3.5E to see more frequent use in the game! :)

Hello,

"Hmm...let's see now...sumthin' amiss here..."

to be a bit more precise, it's,

"Ohhhhhhhh...

Join up with me, so joyous and free,
This way to old Sherwood hie.
For I'm Robin Hood,
and I'm very good
at avoiding the Sherriff's eye.

So we'll trip along merrily,
O'er the greensward so gracefully.
To trip it, trip it, trip it, trip it, tri-ip it up and down.
To trip it, trip it...trip it, trip it, trip it, trip it, trip it, trip it, trip it, trip, whoop, trip it, trip it, trip it, trip, trip it, trip, trip it, trip it, trip it
(*SPLASH*)
So tri-ip it up, and down!"

"Now watch, my good man, as I put a cloth-yard shaft through his wishbone!"

Anyway, straying closer to topic, it is indeed nice that the stupid ranger exception to Ambi/TWF seems to be on the way out. (And as far as I'm concerned, they can do away with the armor restrictions, too, and just start them off without the Heavy Armor Proficiency Feat.) Does anyone know if this is for all double weapons, or just the staff?

I would hope decision for rules in the revision are based on game balance, playability, and what makes sense, more so than what a particular designer personally likes and wants to see more of.

I would have preferred seeing this kind of response:

"Yup. It makes sense, is balanced, and most players like the concept of a monk and ranger with a quarterstaff."

Ah, but isn't the honesty nice for once? ;) Sure they ran it by some playtesters and checked the mood, but I'd guess a good chunk of class improvements and such come from game designers who "like" that class, weapon, domain, form of magic, special effect, monster or whathaveyou.

And of course, you have to give the guy some credit for not being a git. If he "liked" dire flails, they still wouldn't suddenly be class weapons where they don't make sense.

IIRC all other double weapons are exotic... I'd say if you have to spend a feat to use a weapon, you should be able to use it as designed anyway, but thats just me.
