D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] What did they do to improve Spider Climb?

Except for the fact that you get a listed climb speed from the spell. It is certainly one that needs to be cleared up. I think i'd go either way, although I kinda like the idea of checks, although it would probably hurt those casters as they don't have high strengths usually and don't have climb skill.

KaeYoss: Presumably, Drow have a Surfacer Substitution Feat, whereby they can do mean things to surfacers instead of spiders.

I'd love to use that on a Spider Kisser: "Since spiders are sacred to Lolth and you hate fairy-folk elves, you have to eat a live elven baby to get spider climb." :D

Personally I always thought spider climb was a bit too good for a 1st level. There was so much you can do with it, scale any wall, set up ceiling ambushes, spy on people. I'm glad for the change.

But it falls under the heading of "a specific exemption always overrides a general rule" thereby needing no clearing up at all.

...except that the general rule specifically mentions spider climb, so it's a definite contradiction and not an exemption.

The WHOLE baby, or just a chunk?

Can you eat only a leg of that spider in the normal version of the spell? No. So you'll have to eat that baby whole. But never fear: elven babies are quite small.

"I like babies, I just can't eat a whole one."

I doubt there's any chance of persuading my group not to play 3.5e. :D No matter how many stupid changes I bring up, they insist 3.5e is all roses. *sigh*

3.5e *is* all roses. It's just that even the prettiest roses have thorns. :)

Spider Climb was a powerful 1st level spell. I don't really like it being a 2nd level spell, though it's probably more correct in terms of power.

On the plus side, you'll have plenty of 2nd level spell slots, since most people won't bother with the new animal affinity buff spells... (Ducks to avoid thrown objects)
