I've actually eliminated the Spiked Chain as an available weapon in my worlds, for just this reason - besides a spiked chain doesn't really exist from historical resources, it's just a weapon created for D&D for it's mechanical advantages.

I'm sure people can get ridiculous with other weapons.

And I really don't care about historical accuracy.

There is always the weighted chain- an ACTUAL weapon- printed up in Oriental Adventures. Same mechanics, less damage, as I recall.

Maybe, but I haven't seen thread after thread about any specific weapon in D&D/PF, like I have with spiked chain. If other abused weapons were out there, there would be threads about it in RPG forums. I've seen a few on falcatas, but not nearly as many as of spiked chain.

And I really don't care about historical accuracy.

Nor should you, I only said it as it applies to my game.

And a weighted chain does exist in oriental culture, but that is a weapon to beat you death at distance, not trip, trip, trip, trip, as it does with the spiked chain in D&D/PF.

cuz only spellcasters should have nice things, and the ability to lock down combat by themselves, right?

No. Nobody tends to lock down combat by themselves. Our casters mostly buff and debuff. I can't seem to get our casters to cast walls of force and such. A few area of effects are shot off, but the martials tend to work the combat pretty much alone - and not with bizzaro trip master tactics.

Been running games for almost 30 years, and haven't had the problems you suggest. And never needed the spiked chain.

As a player, I only play half casters or martial characters. I've played a sorcerer a few times, but never a full wizard, not since 1e. I'm not 'pro casters' in any way.

Atually, the one as demonstrated on Fight Science by a martial arts master had a fairly light weight. It was used to hit & hurt, for sure, using great speed instead of mass to build up force, but it was also used as an entangling/tripping weapon.

Which is how its statted out in OA.

You may be thinking of the single headed Meteor Hammer, which could have a weight as much as 3kg on the end.

Probably was. When our group plays the orient, we usually play fantasy Japan, not China, while some weapons are exotic compared to western weapons, really not as much as Chinese weapons which we tend not to use. Our fantasy Japan is not right next to analog China in our world. In fact China is not even a part of the world.

But our players tend not to use chain weapon. You could say my 'ban' on it is unofficial, as nobody has ever chosen it as even a secondary weapon - so it's not an issue in our games.

I guess I'm lucky, in that my players aren't min/maxers with only minimal optimization. Weapons and spells aren't chosen for optimization, only to fit the flavor they want their heroes to be perceived. It works for our games.

Me? I love chain weapons, not as a min/maxer, but as a role-player. People who use chain weapons are not your typical warrior- except for the flails, most chain weapons are impractical for the typical warrior.

No, they're the kind of weapon typically reserved for someone being sneaky in some way, for some reason. (Kusarigamas are my fave, followed by the simple chain...)

I cannot get my players to not choose either a sword or a bow, most of the time. As if the only weapons in existence are greatswords, bastard swords or long composite bows. Nobody chooses katana, falcata, polearms, axes, chain weapons, kukri - really just the 2 swords and bow. Even our rogue uses a sword with martial proficiency feat, and he's our sneaky guy.

Make 'em fight things that shrug off slashing and piercing damage...they'll at least find quartertaves, morning stars, flails and mauls. Maybe even throwing hammers.
