[4.3] Another samurai creation thread.

First Post
First off some disclaimers to get out of the way. This will not be a historical character. Some people seem to have an aversion for fantasy in a fantasy game(Go figure?). Second off I am pretty newby so I do not yet know all of the rules and various pieces of D&D. Please be patient with me.

Just getting those out of the way because people seem to really have problems with those things in other threads I read.

Now on to the meat!

I am thinking of adapting the hombrew 3.5e tome samurai (found here) while adding in some personal touches. I have no problem ripping off other classes and reflavoring specific parts but I wont just use another character as-is reflavored. Here is what I have thought out so far.

Role: Striker. He is a glass gun best used one on one.
Power Source: Martial and Divine
Key abilities: Dexterity Wisdom Strength
Armor Proficiency: Cloth, Leather, Hide, Scale but not with shields. Samurai take a -2 to attack roles when wielding a shield.
Weapon Proficiency: All simple and military. In addition a samurai is proficient with the Katana(Bastard sword)
Bonus to Defense: +1 to Will +2 Reflex
Hit points at first level: 12+ constitution score
Hitpoints per Level gained: 5
Healing surges per day: 6+ constitution modifier
Trained skills: religion and Athletics Select 4 more trained skills at the first level:
Acrobatics, Arcana, Diplomacy, Endurance, Heal, History, Insight, Intimidate, Nature, Perception,
Class features: Ancestral Weaponry Familiar

Ancestral Weaponry:
The ancestral weapon is regalia of your status as a samurai and has been passed down through the ages. It has a strong connection to your bloodline and may be used to channel your ancestor's or guardian deity's power.

A samurai can only have one weapon designated as his Ancestral Weapon at a time, and this weapon must not be a magical and suit the Samurai's warrior culture. He must perform a 24 hour ritual to call his ancestral spirits into the weapon and designate it as his Ancestral Weapon. This ritual's costs in incense and offerings scale up per level, and once performed grants the following abilities:

  • Counts as his Ancestral Weapon (AW) for all Samurai abilities.
  • Deals damage normally against incorporeal creatures, regardless of its bonus.
  • Can be called to you at any time by spending a full round action of meditation when called to you the weapon lands as you wish it to
  • Pick an element for your AW. That will be your Ancestral Weapon element (AWE) Choose from (Cold Fire Force Lightning Necrotic Radiant). You may only choose one. The keyword AWE indicates that you may change your damage type to the AWE you chose.
  • Parry Magic (Su): At 8th level, a Samurai may use his Ancestral Weapon to parry magic targeted at him. When the Samurai is targeted by a spell or supernatural ability, he may take an Attack of Opportunity against the targeted effect. If he can make an attack roll against an AC equal to the caster's attack roll with this Attack of Opportunity, the effect does not affect him.
  • Cut Magic (Su): At 12th level, a Samurai may attack ongoing spell effects by attacking the square they are in for Area of Effect effects or the object or person for targeted effects (which does damage as normal to the object or person) with his AW. This attack is handled like the Samurai's Parry Magic ability, but it only dispels a 10' by 10' section of an Area of Effect spell or spell-like ability.
  • Reflect Magic (Su): At 16th level, an spell effect that would be dispelled by a successful use of the Samurai's Parry Magic ability can instead be reflected back on the caster, as per a spell turning effect.
The price for the ritual to channel your ancestors/deity into the weapon is the price for a magical weapon of your level. In addition you may have your ancestral weapon devour a magical weapon of its same type and gain its magical properties in addition to being your ancestral weapon. This ritual requires the weapon and a sum of gold twice the amount of the weapons worth to be offered as part of the ritual. The ritual may only be conducted in a location of power appropriate to the ancestor/deity residing in the AW. The ritual must last 24 hours uninterrupted. If the ritual is interrupted the offerings are consumed but the weapon remains unchanged.

Familiar: (Familiar feat) A Samurai can obtain a Familiar. Doing so takes 24 hours and uses up magical materials that cost 100 gp. A familiar is a magical beast that resembles a small animal and is unusually tough and intelligent. The creature serves as a companion and servant. The Samurai chooses the kind of familiar he gets.

Scrolls of Wisdom: At 20th level, the Samurai has reached the pinnacle of his art, and he may compose a treatise of his collected wisdom. If he spends one month composing this treatise, he may distribute it and spread his wisdom. Anyone who reads this treatise gains a +2 competence bonus to attack characters with Samurai levels, but a -8 penalty to attack the writer of the treatise.
In addition, a Samurai who writes his treatise no longer takes ability penalties for aging as long as one copy of the treatise exists.

I am particularly unsatisfied with his skills. I want it to be a DEX Samurai but the skills do not work well with that. There are no commas because that key is broken in my keyboard.
