so has anything official been released about when we can expect barbarians? what about monks, druids and bards? player created classes are all well and good but i generally find official stuff is more balanced.

well there were the WotC "how to create a (this) class while waiting for the official release"
for instance, it had druids and said to use one of the cleric builds and change the flavor and description of the effect, bards gave afew options depending on what feature of bard you wanted to exploit, and so on.

Some of the monsters have abilities that i am sure will crop up in some variation for the classes, such as a goblin skull crusher has (hghlight for spoiler)
a barbarian-like rage once it gets bloodied

Barbarian, Druid, and Bard (along with Gnome, Half-Orc, and Goliath) have all been officially announced for PHB2 in March '09. No official word yet on Monks.

Barbarian, Druid and Bard are all probably in the PHBII. WotC has all but confirmed their presence there, though some of the other classes therein are less certain.

Monk is waiting for a Ki power Source to come out, which means PHBIII at earliest. Until then, the suggestions on using the Ranger as a Monk standin are actually really good: both monks and rangers are focused on Str, Dex and Wis, and ranger gives a lot of ability to make flurries of blows, shift around the battlefield and get in counterattacks.

If you're only looking for official, you will have to wait for PHBII next March. As alternative suggestions . . . one of my players has been using the ranger as monk suggestion, and it's working out pretty well; he seems to like it.

Some other choices include the Advanced Player's Guide by Ari Marmell from Expeditious Retreat Press in October. This will include 3 new races and 5 new classes, including the ones you mentioned. Also there's Forgotten Heroes: Fang, Fist, and Song from Goodman Games also in October will have the druid, barbarian, monk and bard. Neither of those is official, but both are popular and trusted names.
